An Ultra wideband patch antenna is tested in this paper for Impulse UWB applications. The UWB patch antenna is integrated with UWB bandpass filter of desired operating frequency range. The design is on FR-4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.4 and thickness of 1.6 mm. Impulse performance and angle of operation for such antenna are shown.

There has been a tremendous rumble in UWB research after the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated a frequency range with a bandwidth of 7.5 GHz from 3.1–10.6 GHz for UWB applications. Ultra wideband (UWB) technology was earlier limited to special applications, primarily in the military area and there primarily to electronic warfare. The antennas were usually horn antennas or modified, ridged horn antennas, sometimes in combination with reflectors. Wearable intelligent textile system is an innovative fast growing field in application oriented field. In recent years, body-centric wireless communication becomes an important part of fourth generation mobile communication systems (4G). Utilization of wearable textiles in the antenna segment has been seen on the rise due to the recent miniaturization of wireless devices. Wearable and fabric-based antennas have become one of the dominant research topics in antennas for body-centric communications. The review presented here intended to disclose the unconventional antenna technology including UWB technology for wearable applications. Contributions by various researchers have been compiled keeping in mind background of UWB technology, the wearable antenna, and specification of the antenna, material for the antenna and analysis that must be done to design proper UWB wearable antennas for various applications.

Advancement in Ultra Wideband Antennas for Wearable Applications

In this paper, a patch antenna with band notched characteristics for ultra wide band is proposed. The proposed antenna design is simulated on electromagnetic (EM) simulation software using FR-4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.4 and thickness of 1.6 mm. The proposed antenna has a compact structure, the total size is 15&#x00C3; -- 14.5 mm2 and fed with 50 &#x00CE;&#x00A9; micro strip by optimizing the width of partial ground, the width of the feed line to operate in UWB. With the design, the return loss is lower than 10 dB in 3.1-10.6 GHz frequency range and show the band-notch characteristic in the UWB band to avoid interferences, which is caused by WLAN (5.15&#x00E2;"5.825 GHz) and WiMAX (5.25&#x00E2;"5.85 GHz) systems. In addition, band-notched filtering properties in the 5.15-5.825 GHz are achieved by rectangular slot on the radiating element. The proposed antenna is easy to integrate with microwave circuitry for low manufacturing cost. The antenna structure is flat, and its design is simple and straightforward.

Circuit modeling of an UWB patch antenna

Internet of Things (IoT) will play an important role in the contemporary communication networks. In this modern and future communication paradigm hundreds of different smart Internet enabled devices will communicate with each other continuously. For such communication networks and smart devices, apart from the sophisticated communication protocols, efficient hardware will also play a very crucial role. Antennas being at the front end of communication, are one of the important components of such a hardware. The antennas for IoT applications are required to exhibit three important characteristics, namely; (i) small size, (ii) energy efficiency and (iii) ability to operate in multi antenna environment. In this paper, we propose an antenna design that fulfils these important requirements. We propose an ultra-wideband antenna that is small in size compared to other existing designs, with dimensions 24 × 28 mm2, that can easily fit in hand-held mobile devices. Measured results indicate that the antenna not only has a very small power return loss but also exhibits a low mutual coupling that highlights that the proposed design is capable to operate in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configurations.

A practical miniature antenna design for future internet of things enabled smart devices

Additional guidelines for UWB antenna design are presented and a low-cost UWB antenna is proposed that offers circuit integration possibilities, namely, a partial ground plane triangular monopole (PGPTM). Time and frequency domain performance of this antenna is investigated with the simulation results being in good agreement with the measured values.
