Water use and water use efficiency of old and modern wheat cultivars and one barley cultivar were measured in a Mediterranean environment at Merredin, W.A. Water use efficiency for grain increased substantially from old to modern cultivars, with little difference among modern cultivars. Water use efficiency for dry matter was similar between cultivars. Barley had the highest water use efficiency of both grain and dry matter. Improved water use efficiency for grain in modern cultivars was associated with faster development, earlier flowering, improved canopy structure and higher harvest index. Modern cultivars used slightly less water than old cultivars. The pattern of water use was also different, with late-maturing old cultivars using more water in the pre- than the post-anthesis period. The ratio of pre- to post-anthesis water use was highest with the late-maturing, old cultivar Purple Straw (5.2:1) and lowest with early-maturing, modern cultivar Gutha (3.0:1). Soil evaporation estimates showed that modern cultivars had lower rates of soil evaporation in the early part of the growing season. This was associated with their faster leaf area development and improved light interception. About 40% of the total water use was lost by soil evaporation with very little difference between wheat cultivars. Barley had 15% less soil evaporation than wheat. Water use efficiency for grain based on transpiration (transpiration efficiency) for the four modern cultivars was 15.8 kg ha-1 mm-1, similar to other studies in comparable environments. Some further improvement in water use efficiency appears possible through improvement in crop biomass and harvest index. However, given the frequent and severe limitations of total water supply at low rainfall sites such as Merredin, there appears to be more scope for improvement in yield and water use efficiency in the medium and high rainfall areas of the wheatbelt.

Evidence is presented that water use efficiency and yield of wheat are reduced by insufficient leaf area and by inadequate content of nutrients in the top growth. Yields from field trials are compared with the potential yield, and a review is made of the limitations caused by weeds, the incidence of diseases and the harvest index. The data highlight the need for field experiments to define the evaporation and transpiration components of water use in each environment. They also indicate the need for multi-factorial treatments to overcome all yield limitations and thereby attain the potential yield.

Water use efficiency of wheat in a Mediterranean-type environment. II. some limitations to efficiency

Growth and water use were measured in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in northern Syria in a typical Mediterranean climate over five seasons 1991/92–1995/96. Water use was partitioned into transpiration (T) and soil evaporation (Es) using Ritchie's model, and water-use efficiency (WUE) and transpiration efficiency (TE) were calculated. The aim of the study was to examine the influence of irrigation and nitrogen on water use, WUE and TE. By addition of 100 kg N ha-1, Es was reduced from 120 mm to 101 mm under rain-fed conditions and from 143 mm to 110 mm under irrigated conditions, and T was increased from 153 mm to 193 mm under rain-fed conditions and from 215 mm to 310 mm under irrigated conditions. Under rain-fed conditions, about 35% of evapotranspiration (ET) may be lost from the soil surface for the fertilized crops and 44% of ET for the unfertilized crops. Transpiration accounted for 65% of ET for the fertilized crops and 56% for the unfertilized crops under rain-fed. As a result of this, WUE was increased by 44% for dry matter and 29% for grain yield under rain-fed conditions, and by 60% for dry matter and 57% for grain yield under irrigated conditions. Transpiration efficiency for the fertilized crops was 43.8 kg ha-1 mm-1 for dry matter and 15 kg ha-1 mm-1 for grain yield, while TE for the unfertilized crops was 33.6 kg ha-1 mm-1 and 12.2 kg ha-1 mm-1 for dry matter and grain yield, respectively. Supplemental irrigation significantly increased post-anthesis water use, transpiration, dry matter and grain yield. Water-use efficiency for grain yield was increased from 9.7 to 11.0 kg ha-1 mm-1 by supplemental irrigation, although WUE for dry matter was not affected by it. Irrigation did not affect transpiration efficiency for grain yield, but decreased transpiration efficiency for dry matter by 16%. This was associated with higher harvest index as a result of good water supply in the post-anthesis period and increased transpiration under irrigated conditions.

Effects of fertilizer, variety and location on barley production under rainfed conditions in Northern Syria 2. Soil water dynamics and crop water use

In order to better understand crop growth (dry matter accumulation, DM), crop evapotranspiration (Et), and their interrelationships, we studied dryland crops of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Timgalen) sown at various dates and seeding densities in each of three years at Tamworth, N.S.W. Soil water stress was minimal before anthesis in each year, but in two years substantial stress arose before maturity. DM was increased consistently by increased plant density, and decreased at anthesis and maturity by later sowing. Crop growth rates determined over 2-week intervals around anthesis ranged from 3 to 20 g m-2 d-1, representing a range in efficiency of utilization of intercepted total solar radiation of 0.48 to 2.35%, variation which was adequately explained (R2 = 0.80) by ontogeny (days from anthesis) and Et / Ep ratio (Ep = class A pan evaporation). Et at anthesis, but not at maturity, was increased slightly by higher seedmg density; crop Et was not consistently affected by sowing date. Et / Ep over 2-week periods around anthesis was related to leaf area index, and to a lesser extent to available soil water and Ep (R2 = 0.58). For the period from the first sowing date in June or July until the middle of October, the relationship of total Et to DM production was linear and close each year, but the slope varied from 6.2 g m-2 mm-1 (cold dry year) to 14.0 g m-2 mm-1 (wet year). This variation could be attributed to annual variation in the soil evaporation component of Et, and in the ratio of DM to crop transpiration (= transpiration efficiency, TE). For 2-week periods around anthesis, TE ranged from 2.9 to 5.4 g m-2 mm-1 and was inversely related to Ep (R2 = 0.56). Provided soil evaporation can be allowed for, since it ranged from 18 to 41% of crop Et from sowing to maturity, it is argued that the crop transpirationtranspiration efficiency approach is particularly useful for analysing the growth and water use of dryland wheat.
