Standard sets of supplementary diffuse s and p functions, multiple polarization functions (double and triple sets of d functions), and higher angular momentum polarization functions (f functions) are defined for use with the 6‐31G and 6‐311G basis sets. Preliminary applications of the modified basis sets to the calculation of the bond energy and hydrogenation energy of N2 illustrate that these functions can be very important in the accurate computation of reaction energies.

Self‐consistent molecular orbital methods 25. Supplementary functions for Gaussian basis sets

The Gaussian‐2 theoretical procedure (G2 theory), based on a b i n i t i o molecular orbital theory, for calculation of molecular energies (atomization energies, ionization potentials,electron affinities, and proton affinities) of compounds containing first‐ (Li–F) and second‐row atoms (Na–Cl) is presented. This new theoretical procedure adds three features to G1 theory [J. Chem. Phys. 9 0, 5622 (1989)] including a correction for nonadditivity of diffuse‐s p and 2d f basis set extensions, a basis set extension containing a third d function on nonhydrogen and a second p function on hydrogen atoms, and a modification of the higher level correction. G2 theory is a significant improvement over G1 theory because it eliminates a number of deficiencies present in G1 theory. Of particular importance is the improvement in atomization energies of ionic molecules such as LiF and hydrides such as C2H6, NH3, N2H4, H2O2, and CH3SH. The average absolute deviation from experiment of atomization energies of 39 first‐row compounds is reduced from 1.42 to 0.92 kcal/mol. In addition, G2 theory gives improved performance for hypervalent species and electron affinities of second‐row species (the average deviation from experiment of electron affinities of second‐row species is reduced from 1.94 to 1.08 kcal/mol). Finally, G2 atomization energies for another 43 molecules, not previously studied with G1 theory, many of which have uncertain experimental data, are presented and differences with experiment are assessed.

Gaussian-2 theory for molecular energies of first- and second-row compounds

A set of 148 molecules having well-established enthalpies of formation at 298 K is presented. This set, referred to as the G2 neutral test set, includes the 55 molecules whose atomization energies were used to test Gaussian-2 ~G2! theory @J. Chem. Phys. 94, 7221 ~1991!# and 93 new molecules. The G2 test set includes 29 radicals, 35 nonhydrogen systems, 22 hydrocarbons, 47 substituted hydrocarbons, and 15 inorganic hydrides. It is hoped that this new test set will provide a means for assessing and improving new theoretical models. From an assessment of G2 and density functional theories ~DFT! on this test set it is found that G2 theory is the most reliable method both in terms of average absolute deviation ~1.58 kcal/mol! and maximum deviation ~8.2 kcal/mol!. The largest deviations between experiment and G2 theory occur for molecules having multiple halogens. Inclusion of spin‐orbit effects reduces the average absolute deviation to 1.47 kcal/mol and significantly improves the results for the chlorine substituted molecules, but little overall improvement is seen for the fluorine substituted molecules. Of the two modified versions of G2 theory examined in this study, G2~MP2,SVP! theory ~average absolute deviation51.93 kcal/mol! performs better than G2~MP2! theory ~2.04 kcal/mol!. The G2~MP2,SVP! theory is found to perform very well for hydrocarbons, radicals, and inorganic hydrides. Of the seven DFT methods investigated, the B3LYP method has the smallest average absolute deviation ~3.11 kcal/mol!. Assessment of Gaussian-2 and density functional theories for the computation of enthalpies of formation

The major source of error in most ab initio calculations of molecular energies is the truncation of the one‐electron basis set. Extrapolation to the complete basis set second‐order (CBS2) limit using the N−1 asymptotic convergence of N‐configuration pair natural orbital (PNO) expansions can be combined with the use of relatively small basis sets for the higher‐order (i.e., MP3, MP4, and QCI) correlation energy to develop cost effective computational models. Following this strategy, three new computational models denoted CBS‐4, CBS‐q, and CBS‐Q, are introduced. The mean absolute deviations (MAD) from experiment for the 125 energies of the G2 test set are 2.0, 1.7, and 1.0 kcal/mol, respectively. These results compare favorably with the MAD for the more costly G2(MP2), G2, and CBS‐QCI/APNO models (1.6, 1.2, and 0.5 kcal/mol, respectively). The error distributions over the G2 test set are indistinguishable from Gaussian distribution functions for all six models, indicating that the rms errors can be interpreted in the same way that experimental uncertainties are used to assess reliability.However, a broader range of examples reveals special difficulties presented by spin contamination, high molecular symmetry, and localization problems in molecules with multiple lone pairs on the same atom. These characteristics can occasionally result in errors several times the size expected from the Gaussian distributions. Each of the CBS models has a range of molecular size for which it is the most accurate computational model currently available. The largest calculations reported for these models include: The CBS‐4 heat of formation of tetranitrohydrazine (91.5±5 kcal/mol), the CBS‐4 and CBS‐q isomerization energies for the conversion of azulene to naphthalene (ΔHcalc=−35.2±1.0 kcal/mol, ΔHexp=−35.3±2.2 kcal/mol), and the CBS‐Q heat of formation of SF6 (ΔHcalc=−286.6±1.3 kcal/mol, ΔHexp=−288.3±0.2 kcal/mol). The CBS‐Q value for the dissociation energy of a C–H bond in benzene (113.1±1.3 kcal/mol) is also in agreement with the most recent experimental result (112.0±0.6 kcal/mol). The CBS‐QCI/APNO model is applicable to the prediction of the C–H bond dissociation energies for the primary (100.7±0.7 kcal/mol calc.) and secondary (97.7±0.7 kcal/mol calc., 97.1±0.4 kcal/mol exp.) hydrogens of propane.

A complete basis set model chemistry. V. Extensions to six or more heavy atoms

Peroxynitrite [oxoperoxonitrate(1-), ONOO-] may be formed in vivo from superoxide and nitric oxide. The anion is stable, but the acid (pKa = 6.8) decays to nitrate with a rate of 1.3 s-1 at 25 degrees C. The experimental activation parameters of this process are delta H++ = +18 +/- 1 kcal/mol, delta S++ = +3 +/- 2 cal/(mol.K), and delta G++ = +17 +/- 1 kcal/mol. Peroxynitrite (or its protonated form) oxidizes some compounds such as thiols and thioethers in a biomolecular reaction. The reactions with glutathione and cysteine have activation enthalpies of 10.9 and 9.7 kcal/mol, respectively, which are lower than that of the isomerization reaction. Peroxynitrite reacts with other compounds such as dimethyl sulfoxide and deoxyribose in a unimolecular reaction for which the activation of peroxynitrite is rate-limiting. In theory, activation could involve (1) heterolysis to OH- and NO2+ (delta rxn Gzero' = 13 kcal/mol at pH 7) or (2) homolysis to .OH and .NO2 (delta rxn Gzero = 21 kcal/mol), and these processes also could be involved in the isomerization to nitrate. However, thermodynamic and kinetic considerations indicate that neither process is feasible, although binding to metal ions may reduce the large activation energy associated with heterolysis. An intermediate closely related to the transition state for isomerization of ONOOH to HONO2 may be the strongly oxidizing intermediate responsible for hydroxyl radical-like oxidations mediated by ONOOH. Thus, peroxynitrite reacts with different compounds by at least two distinct mechanisms, and the hydroxyl radical is not involved in either.
