The increasing complexity of engineering systems has sparked increasing interest in multidisciplinary optimization (MDO). This paper presents a survey of recent publications in the field of aerospace where interest in MDO has been particularly intense. The two main challenges of MDO are computational expense and organizational complexity. Accordingly the survey is focused on various ways different researchers use to deal with these challenges. The survey is organized by a breakdown of MDO into its conceptual components. Accordingly, the survey includes sections on Mathematical Modeling, Design- oriented Analysis, Approximation Concepts, Optimization Procedures, System Sensitivity, and Human Interface. With the authors'' main expertise being in the structures area, the bulk of the references focus on the interaction of the structures discipline with other disciplines. In particular, two sections at the end focus on two such interactions that have recently been pursued with a particular vigor: Simultaneous Optimization of Structures and Aerodynamics, and Simultaneous Optimization of Structures Combined With Active Control.

Multidisciplinary aerospace design optimization: Survey of recent developments

According to the multi-objective, multi-constraint, multi-variable characteristics of robot mechanical structure optimization design (RMSOD), taking the solid propellant missile wall grinding robot for example, multi-objective simplification method and design variables division method are presented to simplify the optimization model of RMSOD. Moreover, on the basis of the solution characteristics of discrete variable optimization model, trend meet judgment is used in the calculation of rotating coordinate method to reduce the optimum design variables search space. Ultimately, using the discrete complex method gets the optimum solution of the RMSOD.

Robot mechanical structure optimization design

A new hybrid damper is proposed to suppress the vibration of a flexible cantilever beam at its free end. It consists of an active piezoelectric-type servo-damper and a passive damped vibration absorber to effectively suppress both the small and large amplitude vibrations. The H∞ control scheme is successfully applied to a laboratory test rig equipped with the hybrid damper when its overhung length is continually changed.

Multidisciplinary aerospace design survey of recent developments optimization

A novel mechatronics concept for decentralized vibration control by means of an active absorber is presented. In order to achieve a high dynamic accuracy without spill-over effects an integrated model-based overall optimization both of the hardware and software parameters and of the local placement of the absorber onto the most sensitive points of the mechanical structure is required. Suitable methods both for the experimental model identification and for the structural and parameter optimization are presented. The performance of the mechatronics concept applied to a SCARA type robot is demonstrated by experimental and simulation results. >
