This paper analyzes various algorithms for the automatic generation of electric power system one-line diagrams. Historically these one-line diagrams were created manually. As these diagrams can be large, their manual creation takes a lot of time and resources, and it is also prone to errors. One possible solution to this problem is the automatic generation of one-line diagrams. Automatic visualization can be performed by existing rule-based algorithms, or if the network is modeled by a mathematical graph, then the problem can also be solved by graph drawing algorithms. Initial results achieved with soft computing algorithms will also be shown. We discuss the similarities, differences and applicability of these different algorithms in automatic one-line diagram generation. The final goal is to find the most suitable algorithm for the automatic generation of visually pleasing one-line diagrams, which allow dispatchers and engineers working in control centers a higher level of efficiency in performing their everyday tasks.

Algorithms in electric power system one-line diagram creation

This paper describes an algorithm which automatically generates adaptive one-line diagrams of large electric power distribution systems. The proposed algorithm is different from similar algorithms as it performs adaptive one-line diagram generation, which differ for various zoom levels, showing only the most important objects (e.g. substations, pole switches, power lines) on small zoom levels and gradually adding the less important objects (e.g. lateral parts of the network) as the level of zoom rises, while maintaining the relative positions of the more important objects. The algorithm represents the distribution network as a mathematical graph and visualizes it by utilizing the divide-and-conquer and branch-and-bound algorithms. The algorithm was tested on partial, real life electric power distribution systems of up to 100 objects and it generated visually pleasing one-line diagrams.

The single-line diagram of the distribution network is an electrical wiring diagram with a single feeder as the unit. It realizes the visual expression of the topological connection relationship of the distribution network through graphical symbols and connections, and is one of the most important graphic materials for distribution network management. According to the actual needs of automatic generation of distribution network single-line diagram, this paper provides a method for automatic generation of distribution network single-line diagram based on the trunk-and-branches model. The method firstly carried out the creation of the trunk line, branch line and the calculation of the branch layout direction, then carried out the initial branch layout and local stretching, and finally carried out the branch local shrinkage and automatic routing. In addition, compared with the existing methods, this method also supports the local incremental update of the stock single-line diagram, which can basically ensure the original layout remains unchanged. After verification, based on the automatic generation method of the distribution network single-line diagram, the single-line diagram that meets the requirements of accuracy and aesthetics can be automatically generated. Through a local incremental update, a single-line diagram can be obtained that actually guarantees the layout of the original single-line diagram unchanged, meeting the strong demand of users who wish to keep the layout of the original single-line diagram substantially unchanged. 

Automatic Generation and Incremental Update Method of Single Line Diagram of Distribution Network

Power system planning and decision support is a complex process requiring large scale modelling, analysis and optimisation. There is consequently a growing need for a computer based comprehensive planning and problem solving environment. Such environments must be flexible, scalable and provide long term solutions that not only meet today's needs, but can also support evolving applications. Progress in computer, database and networking technologies has made it possible to attempt to design and implement an integrated comprehensive distributed planning and problem solving environment. We describe the development of an asynchronous distributed planning and problem solving environment (ADP&PSE) for power systems. The distributed platform consists of a network of interconnected personal computers (PCs) and other peripheral devices. The primary aim of the research reported was to implement a comprehensive and graphically integrated software environment on a heterogeneous LAN based computing hardware platform. The environment will also provide tools for the user to model, simulate and analyse large scale power systems. >

Heterogeneous LANs as asynchronous distributed planning and problem solving environments

An optimal one-line diagram generator algorithm is presented. The corresponding cctputer program drives the output device to draw a one-line diagram which is optimal in the sense that for a given drawing area, the minimum distance between elements of the diagram is a maximum. The computer program needs little additional information about the topology of the network to that normally supplied to a load flow program. The problem is posed and solved as a longest path problem. Examples of results of this program coupled to a load flow program are presented.
