Trajectories drawn in a common reference system by all the vehicles on a road are the ultimate empirical data to investigate traffic dynamics. The vast amount of such data made freely available by the Next Generation SIMulation (NGSIM) program is therefore opening up new horizons in studying traffic flow theory. Yet the quality of trajectory data and its impact on the reliability of related studies was a vastly underestimated problem in the traffic literature even before the availability of NGSIM data. The absence of established methods to assess data accuracy and even of a common understanding of the problem makes it hard to speak of reproducibility of experiments and objective comparison of results, in particular in a research field where the complexity of human behaviour is an intrinsic challenge to the scientific method. Therefore this paper intends to design quantitative methods to inspect trajectory data. To this aim first the structure of the error on point measurements and its propagation on the space travelled are investigated. Analytical evidence of the bias propagated in the vehicle trajectory functions and a related consistency requirement are given. Literature on estimation/filtering techniques is then reviewed in light of this requirement and a number of error statistics suitable to inspect trajectory data are proposed. The designed methodology, involving jerk analysis, consistency analysis and spectral analysis, is then applied to the complete set of NGSIM databases.

On the assessment of vehicle trajectory data accuracy and application to the Next Generation SIMulation (NGSIM) program data

Vehicle trajectory data are important for calibrating driver behavior models (e.g., car following, acceleration, lane changing, and gap acceptance). The data are usually collected through imaging technologies, such as video. Processing these data may require substantial effort, and the resulting trajectories usually contain measurement and processing errors while also missing data points. An approach is presented to the processing of position data to develop vehicle trajectories and consequently speed and acceleration profiles. The approach uses local regression, a method well suited for mapping highly nonlinear functions. The proposed methodology is applied to a set of position data. The results demonstrate the value of the method to development of vehicle trajectories and speed and acceleration profiles. The conducted sensitivity analysis also shows that the method is rather robust regarding measurement errors and missing values.

Estimation of Vehicle Trajectories with Locally Weighted Regression

Vehicle trajectory datasets, available to the scientific community within the successful Next-Generation Simulation (NGSIM) program, are offering exciting opportunities to explore traffic phenomena. Nonetheless, measurement errors in available data are increasingly attracting the attention of researchers. This study took up the challenge of inspecting the overall set of the most recent datasets available on-line within the NGSIM program, proposing a systematic methodology based on a novel statement of the problem, especially regarding the issue of trajectory data consistency. As well as stating a general criterion to estimate unbiased trajectories, the authors offer allowed comprehensive review of filtering techniques applied to trajectory data and point out the requirements of estimation techniques. As regards the bias in the estimation of inter-vehicle spacing referred to as platoon consistency, non-negligible errors were detected in all datasets. It is argued that the requirement of consistency is significant for almost all the applications using such data. This research, entailing jerk analysis, consistency analysis and spectral analysis, also provided numerical evidence for the very low quality of estimated accelerations and jerks in particular for one set of databases. The results are also expected to steer users toward choosing the most appropriate dataset.

Estimation of Vehicle Trajectories from Observed Discrete Positions and Next-Generation Simulation Program (NGSIM) Data

A concept is presented for creating a measurement system that can quantify the specific motions which vehicles exhibit as they move in traffic, under the full array of traffic operations. Such quantification is seen as crucial to the development of automatic collision prevention systems and has spinoff utility for the study of many other issues in human factors and vehicle and highway engineering. This study has addressed the experimental and analytical challenges involved in wide-area sensing, large-volume data processing, and both deterministic and statistical analyses of the data which will characterize this so-called, "Vehicle Motion Environment" (VME). The basic concept which appears to be feasible for such measurements involves a remote sensor which is installed at the roadside, probably on a tall pole, and which produces electro-optic images of the traffic stream and converts them into a permanent data file of the quantified trajectory for each motor vehicle passing through the field of view. The paper covers the performance specifications for the VME measurement system plus considerations for the measurement package and the subsequent processing needed for deriving the variables of interest. Various applications of the VME system are also addressed.

Thrusts of the Michigan program in intelligent vehicle-highway systems

Under a cooperative agreement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been supporting a joint effort by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM) to develop and demonstrate a "Measurement and Processing System for Quantitatively Characterizing the Vehicle Motion Environment" (VME). The system has been built and subjected to initial trials and an effort to further refine the system technology is now proceeding. When fully operational, the portable measurement system would be moved from one road site to the next around the country, compiling an archival data set that would represent the near-range behavior of vehicles operating in traffic in the U.S. The VME data record would document our national everyday-driving experience in terms that would assist in developing an "active safety technology" (AST). This paper characterizes the state of VME development and reviews the plan for its application. Also, a review is given of the broad rationale for VME measurement in the context of the global initiative to advance crash avoidance technology.

In 1989, a concept for measurement and analysis of the so-called "Vehicle Motion Environment" (VME) was formed by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and later developed through a joint effort of UMTRI and the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM). The initial work resulted in a report entitled, "The Feasibility of Quantitatively Characterizing the Vehicle Motion Environment." The system employs a laser-based ranging scanner to produce an accurate, quantitative data set defining the movement of actual vehicles operating in the near proximity of one another in the real traffic context. The time history of the VME would be compiled as a computerized archive and used as an engineering tool for understanding and predicting the in-field performance of AST systems.
