A system and method is described that enables a health care provider to monitor and manage a health condition of a patient. The system includes a health care provider apparatus operated by a health care provider and a remotely programmable patient apparatus that is operated by a patient. The health care provider develops a script program using the health care provider apparatus and then sends the script program to a remotely programmable patient apparatus through a communication network such as the World Wide Web. The script program is a computer-executable patient protocol that provides information to the patient about the patient's health condition and that interactively monitors the patient health condition by asking the patient questions and by receiving answers to those questions. The answers to these health related questions are then forwarded as patient data from the remotely programmable patient apparatus to the health care provider apparatus through the communication network. The patient data may also include information supplied by a physiological monitoring device such as a blood glucose monitor that is connected to the remotely programmable patient apparatus. When the patient data arrives at the health care provider apparatus, the patient data is processed for further management of the patient's health condition by the health care provider, such as forwarding another script program to the remotely programmable patient apparatus.

Remote health monitoring and maintenance system

A medical information system receives patient data and information from various sources and displays such information in a variety of formats for use by member of a medical team in a hospital, clinic, or office. The system receives patient information from doctors, pharmacists, patient monitoring equipment, testing laboratories, and/or computer databases. Access to selected subsets of patient information is provided by user selection of specific data sets identified by job function selection icons. Multiple types of patient data are selectively displayed simultaneously, and to multiple remote users. The system can access stored data according to user-specified formulae to compute a score or metric which reflects a relationship between various factors, each factor being weighted appropriately according to its significance as defined in the formula.

Medical information system

A system and method for displaying a health status of hospitalized patients. Patient data associated with hospitalized patients is selected according to display rules. A display module selects selected patient data, applies display rules to the selected patient data, and displays the selected patient data. A smart alert module generates and applies patient specific rules to other selected patient data elements. If a patient-specific rule for a hospitalized patient has been contravened, an alert is issued from the remote command center. Graphical attributes may be assigned to patients for whom an alert has been issued and to selected patient data elements that fall outside of an acceptable range. The graphical attributes determine how selected patient data appear on a display screen.

System and method for displaying a health status of hospitalized patients

A system for determining a treatment plan for a patient comprises a database of patient data elements indicative of a medical condition associated with a patient. A predictive model is applied to patient assessment data and used to prepare a treatment plan. A rules engine applies a patient rule consistent with the treatment plan to selected data elements stored in the database to produce an output indicative of a change in the medical condition of the patient. The output from the rules engine is used to determine if intervention is warranted. The predictive model is applied continuously to determine whether to update the treatment plan and, if necessary, the patient rule.

Using predictive models to continuously update a treatment plan for a patient in a health care location

A system and method that are used for creating a longitudinal medical record for an injured person. The system includes, in at least one embodiment, a plurality of mobile computing devices (104). The mobile computing devices having an interface for receiving information from a first responder or a medic. The mobile computing devices are further connected through a computer network (102) to at least one database (106) at a medical facility such as a hospital.

System and method for handling medical information

A patient data management system (PDMS) developed for use in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Montreal Children's Hospital is described. The PDMS acquires real-time patient data from a network of physiological bedside monitors, and facilitates the review and interpretation of this data by presenting it as graphical trends, charts, and plots on a color video display. The data management structure integrates varied data types and provides database support for different applications, while preserving the real-time acquisition of network data. This structure is based primarily on OS/2 Extended Edition relational database. The relational database design is expected to solve the query shortcomings of the previous data management structure, as well as offer support for security and concurrency. >

Database design of an intensive care unit patient data management system

The development of a patient data management system (PDMS) and its voice data-entry unit is outlined. The PDMS is based on an IBM PS/2 interfaced to a local area network for the acquisition of real-time patient data. The voice data-entry unit is based on a speech recognition unit plugged into a slave IBM AT system which communicates with the PDMS computer and software by means of a serial link. An outline of the features of the speech board is presented, and its user interface and its interface with the current PDMS hardware and software discussed. A prototype version of the voice data-entry unit is being tested with the PDMS for the entry of fluid balance data at the patient bedside. By providing a more natural means of manually entering data, the use of speech recognition and generation in intensive care units looks promising. >

An automatic speech recognition system for bedside data entry in an intensive care unit

An automatic speech recognition system is being developed for a patient data management system (PDMS) in a pediatric intensive care unit (ICU). A number of bedside monitors are linked by a local area network to a personal computer for real-time acquisition of vital sign data and the graphical display of these trends. The PDMS also allows for the input of the fluid balance data, which is then processed by the system. An overview of the different speech recognition systems which provide speaker-dependent speech input are presented. A multimodal person-machine interface supporting data input and interaction by means of keyboard, mouse, or voice input is included. The integration of automatic speech recognition and the multimodal person-machine interface in the OS/2's Presentation Manager environment is discussed. >

A new bedside data entry system is being developed for the patient data management system at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Montreal Children's Hospital. Part of this development is the addition of a nursing workload manager (NWM) to help plan and document the nurses' workload. The NWM has four main functions: generate nursing care plans, automate workload measurement scoring, schedule nursing activities, and set up fluid balance charts by integrating with a fluid balance module. The design and operation of the NWM are presented. The implementation of the nursing care plan generation and workload measurement scoring is detailed along with the results of a user evaluation session. The application was developed using IBM's OS/2 Presentation Manager window environment. >

A patient data management system (PDMS) for use in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Montreal Children's Hospital is described. The PDMS acquires real-time patient data from a network of physiological bedside monitors and facilitates the review and interpretation of this data by presenting it as graphical trends, charts, and plots on a color video display. A patient data simulator was developed for the purpose of complete testing of the PDMS. The simulator also allows for training the medical staff independently of hospital facilities and at a remote location from the ICU. This work outlines the design and functionality of the simulator and focuses on its implementation using OS/2's presentation manager window environment. Some experimental results and performance evaluations are presented, along with areas of future development and use. >
