The recent development in the field of superhard materials with Vickers hardness of ⩾40 GPa is reviewed. Two basic approaches are outlined including the intrinsic superhard materials, such as diamond, cubic boron nitride, C3N4, carbonitrides, etc. and extrinsic, nanostructured materials for which superhardness is achieved by an appropriate design of their microstructure. The theoretically predicted high hardness of C3N4 has not been experimentally documented so far. Ceramics made of cubic boron nitride prepared at high pressure and temperature find many applications whereas thin films prepared by activated deposition from the gas phase are still in the stage of fundamental development. The greatest progress has been achieved in the field of nanostructured materials including superlattices and nanocomposites where superhardness of ⩾50 GPa was reported for several systems. The search for novel, superhard materials

The Vickers indentation fracture toughness test, or VIF, is addressed by considering its origins and the numerous equations that have been applied along with the technique to estimate the fracture resistance, or the KIc of ceramics. Initiation and propagation of cracks during the VIF test are described and contrasted with the pre-cracking and crack growth for internationally standardized fracture toughness tests. It is concluded that the VIF test technique is fundamentally different than standard fracture toughness tests. The VIF test has a complex three-dimensional crack system with substantial deformation residual stresses and damage around the cracks. The VIF test relates to an ill-defined crack arrest condition as opposed to the rapid crack propagation of the standardized fracture toughness tests.

Previously published fracture toughness results employing the VIF technique are reviewed. These reveal serious discrepancies in reported VIF fracture toughness values. Finally, recent fracture resistance measurements by the VIF technique for the Standard Reference Material SRM 2100 are presented. These are compared with standardized test results for the same material. It is concluded that the VIF technique is not reliable as a fracture toughness test for ceramics or for other brittle materials. What the VIF actually measures in terms of fracture resistance cannot be readily defined. It is recommended that the VIF technique no longer be acceptable for the fracture toughness testing of ceramic materials.

On the Vickers Indentation Fracture Toughness Test

There is considerable interest in determining the fracture toughness of brittle materials by measuring the extent of cracking associated with a Vickers indentation because of the ease of specimen preparation and the simplicity of the test. However, confusion has been engendered by the multitude of models and equations in the literature relating the degree of cracking to the fracture toughness. Vickers indentation fracture toughness test Part 1 Review of literature and formulation of standardised indentation toughness equations

Hardness testing obtains material properties from small specimens via measurement of load-displacement response to an imposed indentation; it is a surface characterisation technique so, except in optically transparent materials, there is no direct observation of the assumed damage and deformation processes within the material. Three-dimensional digital image correlation (digital volume correlation) is applied to study deformation beneath indentations, mapping the relative displacements between high-resolution synchrotron X-ray computed tomographs (0.9 μm voxel size). Two classes of material are examined: ductile aluminium-silicon carbide composite (Al-SiC) and brittle alumina (Al2O3). The measured displacements for Hertzian indentation in Al-SiC are in good agreement with an elastic-plastic finite element simulation. In alumina, radial cracking is observed beneath a Vickers indentation and the crack opening displacements are measured, in situ under load, for the first time. Potential applications are discussed of this characterization technique, which does not require resolution of microstructural features.

3D Studies of Indentation by Combined X-Ray Tomography and Digital Volume Correlation

The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate the practical use of nano-indentation and scratch testing in determining mechanical properties of thin coatings. We place our emphasis on how information obtained using both techniques can be combined to give a more complete representation of the properties of a coating–substrate system. Part I of the paper gives an overview of approaches to determine mechanical properties of thin coatings that have been proposed in the literature, and develops them further to be useful tools in the analysis of coatings. This results in methods for measuring the mechanical properties of thin coatings. We particularly emphasise the determination of the elastic modulus, hardness, coating and interfacial fracture toughness and residual stress using indentation and scratch testing. Part II of the paper illustrates the application of these methods to relatively soft coatings of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) filled with colloidal silica or alumina particles on glass. The coatings were prepared using a sol–gel process. We report results of the dependence of the mechanical properties on the filler particle content, illustrating that microstructural changes can also be tracked using these techniques. The effects of the nature and volume fraction of the filler particles are discussed.
