Vibrational spectra and assignments for sixteen chlorobenzenes

A standard intensity scale for Raman bands in liquids has been proposed which is referred to the Raman band at 458 cm−1 in CCl4 taken under the same experimental conditions. Standard intensities are obtained from the photoelectrically registered spectra by correcting for convergence error, spectral sensitivity of the photomultiplier tube, optical density of the sample and reflection loss, and reduction to scattering per molecule. In all cases integrated intensities are used. Calculation of the effect of a triangular slit function on a Lorentz type Raman contour yields correction factors for converting the product of the peak intensity and the observed half band width to integrated intensities. Standard intensities are given for the Raman bands of liquid CH2Cl2, CHCl3, and CCl4. The apparent departure of the intensity from its linear dependence on concentration is also discussed.

Intensity in the Raman Effect. I. Reduction of Observed Intensity to a Standard Intensity Scale for Raman Bands in Liquids

The various instrumental factors which affect both peak and integrated Raman band intensities in liquids are discussed. These factors include the refractive index, color, and temperature of the sample; slit function and spectral sensitivity of the spectrophotometer; and the convergence and line width of the exciting radiation. Procedures for applying corrections for these factors relative to the 459 cm−1 band of carbon tetrachloride are presented. These considerations will allow good relative band areas to be obtained and will facilitate the interchangability of peak intensity data between different laboratories.

Study of the Experimental Factors Affecting Raman Band Intensities in Liquids

A spiral mercury arc light source of the low pressure variety and 2-kilowatt power dissipation is described. The use of this powerful but geometrically undesirable arrangement for making depolarization measurements is investigated. Calculations of convergence errors using the polarized incident light method of Edsall and Wilson indicate a linear convergence correction of measured ρ-values. Measurement of depolarization values of Raman lines whose ρ-value is accurately known confirms the theoretical calculation of convergence correction. From the results moderately accurate ρ-values can be obtained by this method by using an empirical correction curve.
