Today's magnetic-field sensors are not capable of making measurements with both high spatial resolution and good field sensitivity. For example, magnetic force microscopy allows the investigation of magnetic structures with a spatial resolution in the nanometre range, but with low sensitivity, whereas SQUIDs and atomic magnetometers enable extremely sensitive magnetic-field measurements to be made, but at low resolution. Here we use one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in a microscopic field-imaging technique that combines high spatial resolution (within 3 micrometres) with high field sensitivity (300 picotesla).

Bose-Einstein condensates: microscopic magnetic-field imaging

We experimentally demonstrate that one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates brought close to microfabricated wires on an atom chip are a very sensitive sensor for magnetic and electric fields reaching a sensitivity to potential variations of ∼10−14eV at 3μm spatial resolution. We measure a two-dimensional magnetic field map 10μm above a 100-μm-wide wire and show how the transverse current-density component inside the wire can be reconstructed. The relation between the field sensitivity and the spatial resolution is discussed and further improvements utilizing Feshbach-resonances are outlined.

We discuss the application of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) as sensors for magnetic and electric fields. Sensing electric and magnetic fields with Bose-Einstein Condensates

The long-dreamed-of capability of monitoring the molecular machinery in living systems has not been realized yet, mainly due to the technical limitations of current sensing technologies. However, recently emerging quantum sensors are showing great promise for molecular detection and imaging. One of such sensing qubits is the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, a photoluminescent impurity in a diamond lattice with unique room-temperature optical and spin properties. This atomic-sized quantum emitter has the ability to quantitatively measure nanoscale electromagnetic fields via optical means at ambient conditions. Moreover, the unlimited photostability of NV centers, combined with the excellent diamond biocompatibility and the possibility of diamond nanoparticles internalization into the living cells, makes NV-based sensors one of the most promising and versatile platforms for various life-science applications. In this review, we will summarize the latest developments of NV-based quantum sensing with a focus on biomedical applications, including measurements of magnetic biomaterials, intracellular temperature, localized physiological species, action potentials, and electronic and nuclear spins. We will also outline the main unresolved challenges and provide future perspectives of many promising aspects of NV-based bio-sensing.

Toward Quantitative Bio-sensing with Nitrogen-Vacancy Center in Diamond.

Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) are accepted as one of the highest magnetic field sensitive probes. There are increasing demands to image local magnetic fields to explore spin properties and current density distributions in a two-dimensional layer of semiconductors or superconductors. Nano-SQUIDs have recently attracting much interest for high spatial resolution measurements in nanometer-scale samples. Whereas weak-link Dayem Josephson junction nano-SQUIDs are suitable to miniaturization, hysteresis in current-voltage (I-V) characteristics that is often observed in Dayem Josephson junction is not desirable for a scanning microscope. Here we report on our development of a weak-link nano-SQUIDs scanning microscope with small hysteresis in I-V curve and on reconstructions of two-dimensional current density vector in two-dimensional electron gas from measured magnetic field.

Imaging of current density distributions with a Nb weak-link scanning nano-SQUID microscope.

We have developed a scanning magnetic microscope (SMM) with 25 µm resolution in spatial position for the magnetic features of room temperature objects. The microscope consists of a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) dc SQUID sensor, suspended in vacuum with a self-adjusting standoff, close spaced liquid nitrogen Dewar, X–Y scanning stage and a computer control system. The HTS SQUIDs were optimized for better spatial and field resolutions for operation at liquid nitrogen temperature. Measured inside a magnetic shield, the 10 pT Hz−1/2 typical noise of the SQUIDs is white down to frequencies of about 10 Hz, increasing up to about 20 pT Hz−1/2 at 1 Hz. The microscope is mounted on actively damped platforms, which negate vibrations from the environment as well as damping internal stepper motor noises. A high-resolution video telescope and a 1 µm precision z-axis positioning system allow a close positioning of the sample under the sensor. The ability of the sensors to operate in unshielded environmental conditions with magnetic fields up to about 15 G allowed us to perform 2D mapping of the local ac and dc susceptibility of the objects.
