Acoustical and mechanical design features of NASA Lewis Research Center's engine fan noise facility are described. Acoustic evaluation of the chamber, which is lined with an array of stepped wedges, is described. Results from the evaluation in terms of cut-off frequency and non-anechoic areas near the walls are detailed. Fan models are electrically driven to 20,600 RPM in either the inlet mode or exhaust mode to facilitate study of both fore and aft fan noise. Inlet noise characteristics of the first fan tested are discussed and compared to full-scale levels. Turbulence properties of the inlet flow and acoustic results are compared with and without a turbulence reducing screen over the fan inlet.

Qualitative and quantitative spectral analyses are presented that give the broadband-noise, discrete-tone, and multiple-tone properties of the noise generated by a full-scale high-bypass single-stage axial-flow transonic fan (fan B, NASA Quiet Engine Program). The noise components were obtained from narrow-band spectra in conjunction with 1/3-octave-band spectra. Variations in the pressure levels of the noise components with fan speed, forward-quadrant azimuth angle, and frequency are presented and compared. The study shows that much of the apparent broadband noise on 1/3-octave-band plots consists of a complex system of shaft-order tones. The analyses also indicate the difficulties in determining or defining noise components, especially the broadband level under the discrete tones. The sources which may be associated with the noise components are discussed.

Some observations about the components of transonic fan noise from narrow-band spectral analysis

An existing fan stage, redesigned to reduce stator lift fluctuations, was tested acoustically for reduced noise generation. The lift fluctuations on the stator were reduced by increasing the stator chord, adjusting incidence angles, and by adjusting the rotor velocity diagrams. The experiments showed significantly reduced broadband noise levels in the middle to high frequencies. Blade passage tone power was not reduced, but decreases in the harmonics were observed. Aerodynamic improvements in both performance and efficiency were obtained.

Fan Stage Redesigned to Decrease Stator Lift Fluctuation Noise

Two inlet noise suppressors containing wall treatment plus three treated rings were tested on a fan in an outdoor noise facility. Sound power attenuations were measured for three treated lengths of each suppressor. The noise reduction from the segment of liner closest to the fan, which contained a segment of wall treatment downstream of the splitter rings, was greater than the reduction from either of the other segments. The decibel attenuations of the ringed liner segments were linear with liner length as predicted by theory. The acoustic attenuation of the wall treatment was considerably greater than expected for available theory. This inordinate effectiveness of the wall treatment strongly suggests the possibility of using no-ring inlet suppressors when the required noise reduction is moderate. The decibel attenuations were higher than predicted above 2000 hertz, and the two suppressors behaved similarly despite the prediction of different behavior.
