The interface of the Eden clusters on percolation networks and the ballistic deposition model is studied by Monte Carlo simulations, using a simple definition for the surface thickness. The width of the active zone in the ballistic deposition model is found to diverge differently from the mean height, indicating breakdown of the single scaling length assumption in this model. The exponents nu and nu ' describing, respectively, the divergence of the radius and the active zone of the Eden clusters on percolation networks appear to be the same within the statistical errors. The central value of nu ', however, is slightly, but systematically, less than nu . The surface thickness of ballistic deposits is shown to exhibit finite-size scaling.

Aggregation and Fractal Aggregates

A three-dimensional model for particle-size segregation by shaking has been developed and used to study the upward motion of a large sphere in a random packing of smaller spheres. In this model segregation occurs only for values of the diameter ratio (\ensuremath{\Phi}) above a critical value ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$\ensuremath{\simeq}2.8. The ratio of the upward velocity of the large particles to their diameter is greatest for values of \ensuremath{\Phi} just larger than ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$. The simulation results can be understood in terms of a simple theoretical model that becomes exact in the limit \ensuremath{\Phi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}.

Three-dimensional model for particle-size segregation by shaking.

Uniformly sized microspheres interacting via long-range magnetic dipolar forces are used to study diffusion-limited cluster aggregation in a plane. The results show that it is possible to scale the temporal evolution of the cluster size distribution and that there is a crossover in fractal dimension from $D=1.52\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05$ to $D=1.16\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05$ in the limit of weak and strong dipolar coupling. External magnetic fields are shown to produce pronounced chaining with $D$ approaching 1. The results compare favorably with computer simulations of aggregation of the same type of particles.

Aggregation of magnetic microspheres: Experiments and simulations.

Digital annular dark-field images of aggregated iron polydisperse particles are obtained using a computer-controlled STEM. Different methods are discussed on how to extract the fractal dimension of the aggregates, and the sources of error are analysed. The results are compared with computer simulations on a polydisperse version of the cluster-cluster aggregation model. Simulations show that polydispersity does not affect the fractal dimension. The experimental result for the fractal dimension (D=1.9±0.1) is consistent with the cluster-cluster model with linear trajectories Des images digitalisees en fond noir annulaire d'agregats polydisperses de billes de fer sont obtenues avec un microscope electronique pilote par ordinateur. On discute des differentes methodes capables d'extraire la dimension fractale des agregats et on analyse les differentes sources d'erreur. Les resultats sont compares avec des simulations a l'ordinateur utilisant une version polydisperse du modele d'agregation par collage d'amas. Les simulations montrent que la polydispersite n'affecte pas la valeur de la dimension fractale. Le resultat experimental (D=1,9±0,1) est consistant avec un modele d'agregation par collage d'amas avec trajectoires lineaires
