Modeling evolving product data for concurrent engineering

Reports on an ongoing research project into organisational learning in virtual organisations using the Organisational Learning Evaluation Cycle developed by J. Gasston and P. Halloran (1999). A review of the literature shows that considerable research has been done in the area of organisational learning; however, the concepts are mainly focused on traditional organisational forms and are difficult to apply to virtual organisations due to their unique characteristics. The characteristics relate to competitive relationships between organisational entities within the virtual organisation, the nature of which has an effect upon the level of organisational learning. This paper discusses factors that influence learning in the virtual organisation, including the type of alliance formed; the level of cooperation between organisations; the use of information and communication technologies; the ability to capture and codify tacit expert knowledge in constantly changing environments; the extent to which shared knowledge is applied; the level of individual contributions or the adoption of organisational memory; and the presence of a strong learning culture.

Exploring organisational learning in virtual forms of organisation

The paper describes the access to a database of prosthetic parts using an information sharing system. The prosthetic parts modeled are made of ceramic materials. The prosthetic parts are a femoral head, a cup, and a cup and head device. The information about the prosthetic parts is based on a feature based model and is stored in a relational database. The model for the information sharing system is object oriented. The relational database is accessed remotely from the object oriented model using gateways.

The collaborative approach to product development is becoming increasingly recognized as a key to improve the productivity of the participating team members. However, in practice, its realization is hindered by the lack of computing environments to support collaborative work. The set of basic transactions needed in a collaborative setting consists of a variety of activities: look up, communicate, compute, decide, negotiate, and archive. We discuss a generic architecture for a collaborative environment. We discuss the application of the same generic architecture to the software domain: to develop an environment for independent verification and validation (IV&V) of software. The benefits of the collaborative approach are: early diagnosis of problems, improvement in efficiency and team performance, and consequently cost savings. This will be especially beneficial for IV&V of large software systems. We illustrate the collaborative environment using an example of a software that performs set operations on polygons. >
