The degradation characteristics and pathways of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by the photo-Fenton systems were studied in H2O2 aqueous solutions, which contained Fe(III) only [H2O2/Fe(III) system] and Fe(III) + humic acid (HA) [H2O2/Fe(III)/HA system] at pH 5.0. Although 40% of the PCP was degraded after 5 h of irradiation in the H2O2/Fe(III) system, more than 90% was degraded in the H2O2/Fe(III)/HA system. This shows that at pH 5.0 the degradation of PCP is clearly enhanced by the presence of HA in the photo-Fenton system. In the H2O2/Fe(III) system, the production of octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) was detected, and 2-hydroxy nonachlorodiphenyl ether was also identified as a precursor of OCDD. However, no OCDD production was observed in the H2O2/Fe(III)/HA system. Degradation pathways of pentachlorophenol by photo-Fenton systems in the presence of iron(III), humic acid, and hydrogen peroxide.

Protein dynamic binding capacities on ion exchange resins are typically expected to decrease with increasing conductivity and decreasing protein charge. There are, however, conditions where capacity increases with increasing conductivity and decreasing protein charge. Capacity measurements on two different commercial ion exchange resins with three different monoclonal antibodies at various pH and conductivities exhibited two domains. In the first domain, the capacity unexpectedly increased with increasing conductivity and decreasing protein charge. The second domain exhibited traditional behavior. A mechanism to explain the first domain is postulated; proteins initially bind to the outer pore regions and electrostatically hinder subsequent protein transport. Such a mechanism is supported by protein capacity and confocal microscopy studies whose results suggest how knowledge of the two types of IEX behavior can be leveraged in optimizing resins and processes.

An exclusion mechanism in ion exchange chromatography

Microbiological decontamination of technical chlorophenol-containing soil by composting was studied. In two 50 m3 windrows the concentration of chlorophenols went down from 212 mg kg-1 to 30 mg kg-1 in 4 summer months and after the second summer of composting it was only 15 mg kg-1. All chlorophenol congeners present in the technical chlorophenol were degraded, but the main dimeric impurities, polychlorinated phenoxyphenols were recalcitrant. The contaminated soil was found to contain chlorophenol-degrading microbes, 5x106 cfu g-1 of dry windrow soil. Laboratory experiments with samples from the windrow compost showed that chlorophenols were truly degraded and that chlorophenol loss by evaporation was less than 1.5% under the circumstances studied. Laboratory experiments also showed that degradation of chlorophenols (120 mg kg-1) was accelerated when sterilized contaminated soil was inoculated with Rhodococcus chlorophenolicus (mineralizer of several chlorophenols) or naturally occurring microbes of the field composts. Biomethylation of chlorophenols in the composts was insignificant compared to biodegradation.
