The performance of the 1.5-μm pulsed Doppler lidar, operated by the U.K. Universities Facility for Atmospheric Measurement (UFAM) over a 51-day continuous and unattended field deployment in southern England, is described and analyzed with a view to demonstrating the capabilities of the system for remote measurements of aerosols and velocities in the boundary layer. A statistical assessment of the vertical pointing mode in terms of the availability and errors in the data versus range is presented. Examples of lidar data are compared to theoretical predictions, radiosondes, the UFAM radar wind profiler, and an ultrasonic anemometer.

An Analysis of the Performance of the UFAM Pulsed Doppler Lidar for Observing the Boundary Layer

The design and performance of a simple, multifunction 1.55-mum continuous-wave (cw) and frequency-modulated cw coherent laser radar system with an output power of 1 W is presented. The system is based on a semiconductor laser source plus an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, a polarization-independent fiber-optic circulator used as the transmit-receive switch, and digital signal processing. The system is shown to be able to perform wind-speed measurements even in clear atmospheric conditions when the visibility exceeds 40 km. The aerosol measurements indicate the potential to use single-particle detection for wind measurements with enhanced sensitivity. The system can perform range and line-of-sight velocity measurements of hard targets at ranges of the order of several kilometers with a range accuracy of a few meters and a velocity accuracy of 0.1 m/s by use of triangular-wave frequency modulation with compensation of the frequency-modulation response of the semiconductor laser. The system also demonstrates a capability for vibration sensing.

All-Fiber Multifunction Continuous-Wave Coherent Laser Radar at 1.55 num for Range, Speed, Vibration, and Wind Measurements.

A compact 1.5 microm all-fiber pulsed coherent Doppler lidar system for wind sensing, which includes the functions of variable pulse width and automatic polarization control has been developed. The system configuration is introduced and key components used in the system are explained. Theoretical performances of the system in wind sensing are estimated and compared with experimental results. The measurable range corresponding to the detection probability of >80% is approximately 1 km or more in the case of 150 m range resolution under the normal atmospheric conditions.

Compact all-fiber pulsed coherent Doppler lidar system for wind sensing

The three-dimensional global wind field is the most important remaining measurement needed to accurately assess the dynamics of the atmosphere. Wind information in the tropics, high latitudes, and stratosphere is particularly deficient. Furthermore, only a small fraction of the atmosphere is sampled in terms of wind profiles. This limits our ability to optimally specify initial conditions for numerical weather prediction (NWP) models and our understanding of several key climate change issues. Because of its extensive wind measurement heritage (since 1968) and especially the rapid recent technology advances, Doppler lidar has reached a level of maturity required for a space-based mission. LIDAR-MEASURED WIND PROFILES The Missing Link in the Global Observing System

The performance of a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) semiconductor laser radar has been examined. Frequency modulation (linear chirp) has been studied experimentally in detail. To create a linear frequency sweep, we modified the modulating function according to the measured frequency response of the laser, using an arbitrary function generator. The measurements indicate the possibility of achieving a spectral width of the signal peak that is transform limited rather than limited by the frequency modulation response of the laser, which permits the use of a narrow detection bandwidth. The narrow width results in a relatively high signal-to-noise ratio for low output power and thus also in relatively long-range and high-range accuracy. We have performed measurements of a diffuse target to determine the performance of a test laser radar system. The maximum range, range accuracy, and speed accuracy for a semiconductor laser with an output power of 10 mW and a linewidth of 400 kHz are presented. The influence of the laser’s output power and coherence length on the performance of a semiconductor-laser-based FMCW laser radar is discussed.

Linearization of the frequency sweep of a frequency-modulated continuous-wave semiconductor laser radar and the resulting ranging performance

Coherent lidar/laser radar systems have been used for the remote measurement of atmospheric wind velocity since 1966. Both CW and pulsed coherent lidars have been developed and applied to a variety of ground-based and airborne applications. In recent years, most efforts have concentrated on pulsed CO/sub 2/ and solid-state Doppler lidars for the remote measurement of atmospheric wind velocities. Issues associated with the design and application of coherent lidars to atmospheric wind measurement are discussed. Coherent lidar/laser radar systems have been applied to detection and tracking of aircraft wake vortices, measurement of atmospheric wind fields during the space shuttle takeoff and landing, airborne windshear detection, ground-based airport microburst windshear monitoring, meteorological research, and environmental monitoring. Numerous examples of measurement results are presented. An assessment of the status of coherent lidar technology as practical devices for operational and research uses is addressed.
