[1] High pressure melting of (Mg,Fe)O ferropericlase, the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's lower mantle, is of fundamental importance for understanding the chemical differentiation, geodynamics and thermal evolution of the Earth's interior. We report the first systematic experimental study of melting behavior in the MgO-FeO system up to 3600 K and 7 GPa, indicating the ideal solution between solid and liquid (Mg,Fe)O in the MgO-rich portion. The zero pressure melting slope of MgO is ∼221 K/GPa derived from our resistance heating measurements, which is several times higher than the value from the previous measurements in a CO2-laser heated diamond anvil cell, but consistent with the theoretically predicted melting curves. Our results combined with the previous first-principles simulations suggest that the melting temperature of MgO-rich (Mg,Fe)O is significantly higher than the geotherm through the lower mantle and this would place an upper bound on the solidus of the lower mantle.

Melting behavior of (Mg,Fe)O solid solutions at high pressure

The discovery of an extraordinary number of extrasolar planets, characterized by an unexpected variety of sizes, masses and orbits, challenges our understanding of the formation and evolution of the planets in the Solar System and the perception of the Earth as the prototypical habitable world. Many exoplanets appear to be rocky and yet more massive than the Earth, with expected pressures and temperatures of hundreds of gigapascal and thousands of Kelvin in their deep interiors. At these conditions, the properties of bridgmanite and ferropericlase, expected to dominate their mantles, are largely unconstrained, limiting our knowledge of their interior structure. Here we used nano-second X-ray diffraction and dynamic compression to experimentally investigate the atomic structure and density of iron oxide (FeO), one of the end-members of the (Mg,Fe)O ferropericlase solid solution, up to 700 GPa, a pressure exceeding the core–mantle boundary of a 5 Earth masses planet. Our data document the stability of the high-pressure cesium-chloride B2 structure above 300 GPa, well below the pressure required for magnesium oxide (MgO) to adopt the same phase. These observations, complemented by the calculation of the binary MgO–FeO phase diagram, reveal complex stratification and rheology inside large terrestrial exoplanets. The interior structure and rheology of large terrestrial exoplanets is strongly affected by the phase transition of iron-oxide, according to dynamic compression and X-ray diffraction FeO experiments up to 700 GPa and calculation of the binary MgO–FeO phase diagram.

A molecular dynamics study of grain boundary diffusion in MgO

Ultra-low velocity zones (ULVZs) are localized small-scale patches with extreme physical properties at the core-mantle boundary that often gather at the margins of Large Low Velocity Provinces (LLVPs). Recent studies have discovered several mega-sized ULVZs with a lateral dimension of ~900 km. However, the detailed structures and physical properties of these ULVZs and their relationship to LLVP edges are not well constrained and their formation mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we break the degeneracy between the size and velocity perturbation of a ULVZ using two orthogonal seismic ray paths, and thereby discover a mega-sized ULVZ at the northern edge of the Pacific LLVP. The ULVZ is almost double the size of a previously imaged ULVZ in this region, but with half of the shear velocity reduction. This mega-sized ULVZ has accumulated due to stable mantle flow converging at the LLVP edge driven by slab-debris in the lower mantle. Such flow also develops the subvertical north-tilting edge of the Pacific LLVP.
