Overuse of pharmaceuticals products (PPs) and sometimes ineffective wastewater purification systems have led to the accumulation of these residues in aquatic systems. Raising concerns about the likely harmful effects of these substances both to ecosystems and to human health. Animals as model organisms are nowadays increasingly used to track the health of environmental system around the world. They can be used to understand biological processes, to obtain information on the health status of the environment, and to better understand the effects of xenobiotics on organisms. Among model organisms, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) is one of the best models for studying evolution biology, cancer, toxicology, drug discovery, and genetics. This fish is a multipurpose model organism, due to its easy of maintenance and keeping and the transparency of the embryo during the early stages of development. In this paper, the toxicological effects of typical PPs, and their effects on zebrafish are reviewed. Many PPs have been found to be toxic or even fatal to zebrafish. Showing how these pharmaceuticals compound can affect zebrafish from the larval stage and even in the adult stage. Zebrafish is thus a model for how we can better understand how medications affect not only individual fish but the entire aquatic ecosystem, bringing about perturbations in their behaviour and putting their survival at risk.

Emerging organic pollutants (EOPs), including endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), constitute a problem in the environmental field as they are difficult to completely degrade by conventional treatment methods. Non-thermal plasma technology is a novel advanced oxidation process, which combines the effects of free radical oxidation, ozone oxidation, ultraviolet radiation, shockwave, etc. This paper summarized and discussed the research progress of non-thermal plasma remediation of EOPs-contaminated water and soil. In addition, the reactive species in the process of non-thermal plasma degradation of EOPs were summarized, and the degradation pathways and degradation mechanisms of EOPs were evaluated of selected EOPs for different study cases. At the same time, the effect of non-thermal plasma in synergy with other techniques on the degradation of EOPs in the environment was evaluated. Finally, the bottleneck problems of non-thermal plasma technology are summarized, and some suggestions for the future development of non-thermal plasma technology in the environmental remediation were presented. This review contributes to our better understanding of non-thermal plasma technology for remediation of EOPs-contaminated water and soil, hoping to provide reference for relevant practitioners.

Recent Advances of Emerging Organic Pollutants Degradation in Environment by Non-Thermal Plasma Technology: A Review

Current status of microbes involved in the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) pollutants in the aquatic ecosystem.

Glutaredoxins (Grxs) are small, ubiquitous, multi-functional proteins present in different compartments of plant cells. A chloroplast targeted class I GRX (CcGRXS12) gene was isolated from Capsicum chinense during the pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) infection. Functional characterization of the gene was performed in N. benthamiana transgenic plants transformed with native C. chinense GRX (Nb:GRX), GRX-fused with GFP (Nb:GRX-GFP) and GRX truncated for the chloroplast targeting sequences but fused with GFP (Nb:Δ2MGRX-GFP). Over-expression of CcGRXS12 inhibits the PMMoV-I accumulation at late stage of infection and is accompanied with the activation of SA- pathway pathogenesis related (PR) transcripts, and suppression of JA/ET- pathway transcripts. Further the reduced accumulation of auxin-induced Glutathione-S-Transferase (pCNT103) in CcGRXS12 over expressing lines indicates that the protein could able to protect the plants from the oxidative stress caused by the virus. PMMoV-I infection increases accumulation of pyridine nucleotides (PNs) mainly due to the reduced form of PNs (NAD(P)H) and it was higher in Nb:GRX-GFP lines compared to other lines where infection is limited. Apart from biotic stress, CcGRXS12 protects the plants from abiotic stress conditions caused by H2O2 and herbicide paraquat. CcGRXS12 exhibits GSH-disulphide oxidoreductase activity in vitro however devoid of complementary Fe-S cluster assembly mechanism in yeast.
