Television holography (TVH) can be defined as `the family of optical measurement techniques based on the electronic recording and processing of holograms'. Image-plane TVH was introduced in the early 1970s with the name `electronic speckle-pattern interferometry' (ESPI). Since then, TVH has undergone an impressive development and become one of the most promising optical techniques for non-destructive testing and industrial inspection. The aim of this review is to propose an original scheme for the systematic treatment of TVH and to review the existing techniques according to it. In this approach we split the measurement process into four highly independent stages (illumination and observation geometry, temporal treatment, secondary-correlogram generation and fringe-pattern analysis) and establish a common notation to formulate the corresponding techniques. Such a strategy allows the free combination of the techniques proposed for each stage as building blocks to obtain every particular variant of the whole TVH measurement process, whether it has already been reported or not, and also the incorporation of new techniques while retaining compatibility with the existing variants of the previous and following stages.

A systematic approach to TV holography

In this paper we extend and study the method for generating contours of diffuse objects employing a dual beam illumination coupled with electronic speckle pattern interferometry. The sensitivity and the orientation of the contour planes are analyzed. A novel method for tilting the planes of contours and experimental results incorporating phase shifting and fringe analysis are also presented. The theoretical and the experimental results show good agreement.

Contouring by electronic speckle pattern interferometry employing dual beam illumination

We outline a novel method for determining the shape of an object by use of temporal Fourier-transform analysis in dual-beam illumination speckle interferometry. The object whose shape is to be determined is rotated about an axis, and a number of frames of the image of the object motion are acquired. Temporal in-plane displacement that is due to the object rotation is related to the shape of the object and is retrieved from this large set of data by Fourier transformation. With this method one can determine the absolute height of the object with variable resolution, thereby allowing shapes of objects with large and small slopes to be determined. The theory of the method along with experimental results is presented.

Slope measurement by two-wavelength electronic shearography

An optical configuration for measurement of in-plane displacement and for contouring is reported. In this method an object point is viewed symmetrically with respect to surface normal and combined coherently at the image plane of the imaging system. Because the beams are combined by small apertures at the image plane, decorrelation sets in rather slowly. Owing to low decorrelation, fringes have been obtained for large in-plane deformations and large angular tilts. The method is simple to implement, and its sensitivity can be varied over a wide range. The configuration, therefore, extends the range of measurement.

Optical configuration for measurement in speckle interferometry.

A new method of contouring 3-D objects in real-time is suggested. The technique makes use of Digital Speckle Pattern Interferometry (DSPI) alongwith an in-plane sensitive optical configuration. The contour interval can be varied in real-time by varying the tilt applied to the object. The variation of the contour interval with the tilt angle and the angle between the illumination beams is discussed. The decorrelation of speckle pattern due to tilt and consequently the disappearance of the fringes is also discussed.
