Engineering Optimization : Theory and Practice

This paper reviews the basic approximation concepts used in structural optimization. It also discusses some of the most recent developments in that area since the introduction of approximation concepts in the mid-seventies. The paper distinguishes between local, medium-range and global approximations; it covers function approximations and problem approximations. It shows that, although the lack of comparative data established on reference test cases prevents an accurate assessment, there have been significant improvements. The largest number of developments have been in the areas of local function approximations and use of intermediate variable and response quantities. It appears also that some new methodologies emerge which could greatly benefit from the introduction of new computer architectures.

Approximation concepts for optimum structural design — a review

An historical account is given of the development, from its conception in 1960, of the structural synthesis method. While synthesis techniques lag behind analytical ones in both sophistication and application, the structural design procedures created by combining finite element analysis and mathematical programming algorithms have progressed to the point of maturity. As in the case of finite element analysis, use and acceptance of structural synthesis methodology depends on the development and distribution of easily used and well-documented, production-quality computer programs. Attention is given such elementary applications of synthesis methods as the three-bar truss, an integrally stiffened waffle plate, a stiffened cylindrical shell, aircraft fuselage window panels, the structural efficiency of graphite-epoxy hat-stiffened panels, and an idealized delta wing.

Structural synthesis - Its genesis and development

Optimization techniques are increasingly being used for performing nonlinear structural analysis. The development of element by element (EBE) preconditioned conjugate gradient (CG) techniques is expected to extend this trend to linear analysis. Under these circumstances the structural design problem can be viewed as a nested optimization problem. There are computational benefits to treating this nested problem as a large single optimization problem. The response variables (such as displacements) and the structural parameters are all treated as design variables in a unified formulation which performs simultaneously the design and analysis. Two examples are used for demonstration. A seventy-two bar truss is optimized subject to linear stress constraints and a wing box structure is optimized subject to nonlinear collapse constraints. Both examples show substantial computational savings with the unified approach as compared to the traditional nested approach.

Simultaneous analysis and design

Solution of the optimum sensitivity problem yields the values of derivatives of the optimal objective function and design variables with respect to those physical quantities which were kept constant as problem parameters during optimization. Examples of these sensitivity derivatives might include derivatives of cross-section al area and structural mass with respect to allowable stress and derivatives of fuel consumed and wing aspect ratio with respect to aircraft range. Derivation of the sensitivity equations that yield the sensitivity derivatives directly, which avoids the costly and inaccurate "perturb-and-reoptimize" approach, is discussed and solvability of the equations is examined. The equations apply to optimum solutions obtained by direct search methods as well as those generated by procedures of the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) class. Applications are discussed for the use of the sensitivity derivatives in extrapolation of the optimal objective function and design variable values for incremented parameters, optimization with multiple objectives, and decomposition of large optimization problems. Several aspects of these applications and verification of the sensitivity equations are presented through numerical examples.

Sensitivity of Optimum Solutions of Problem Parameters

A quadratic extended interior penalty function formulation especially well suited for second-order unconstrained optimization procedures is presented. Analytical derivatives of constraints and an approximate analysis technique are used. Minimum-mass design results are presented which indicate that the combination of these procedures can help make mathematical programming a useful optimization tool for large-order structural design problems with a large number of design variables and multiple constraints. Examples include statically loaded high- and low-aspect-ratio wings simultaneously subjected to stress, displacement, minimum gage and, in some cases, maximum strain constraints.
