The demand for lightweight converters with high control performance and low acoustic noise led to an increase in switching frequencies of hard switched two-level low-voltage 3-phase converters over the last years. For high switching frequencies, converter efficiency suffers and can be kept high only by employing cost intensive switch technology such as SiC diodes or CoolMOS switches; therefore, conventional IGBT technology still prevails. In this paper, the alternative of using three-level converters for low-voltage applications is addressed. The performance and the competitiveness of the three-level T-type converter (3LT2C) is analyzed in detail and underlined with a hardware prototype. The 3LT2 C basically combines the positive aspects of the two-level converter such as low conduction losses, small part count and a simple operation principle with the advantages of the three-level converter such as low switching losses and superior output voltage quality. It is, therefore, considered to be a real alternative to two-level converters for certain low-voltage applications.

Design and Implementation of a Highly Efficient Three-Level T-Type Converter for Low-Voltage Applications

The steady growth of installed wind power together with the upscaling of the single wind turbine power capability has pushed the research and development of power converters toward full-scale power conversion, lowered cost pr kW, increased power density, and also the need for higher reliability. In this paper, power converter technologies are reviewed with focus on existing ones and on those that have potential for higher power but which have not been yet adopted due to the important risk associated with the high-power industry. The power converters are classified into single- and multicell topologies, in the latter case with attention to series connection and parallel connection either electrical or magnetic ones (multiphase/windings machines/transformers). It is concluded that as the power level increases in wind turbines, medium-voltage power converters will be a dominant power converter configuration, but continuously cost and reliability are important issues to be addressed.

Power Electronics Converters for Wind Turbine Systems

Efficient energy conversion in low-voltage applications has gained more attention due to increasing energy costs and environmental issues. Accordingly, three-level converters have been discussed as an alternative to the standard two-level voltage-source converter because they offer an increased efficiency at higher switching frequencies. From a system perspective, the benefits of using three-level converters are not only limited to the converter itself, but there are additional positive impacts on the surrounding such as on the load machine losses or on the electromagnetic interference input filter volume. In this paper, a holistic comparison of advanced three-level topologies against the two-level topology is given. Simple analytical calculations and measurements show the benefits and the optimization potential concerning several aspects, such as the necessary semiconductor chip area, the harmonic losses in the load machine and in filter components, and the volume of passive components.

Comparative Evaluation of Advanced Three-Phase Three-Level Inverter/Converter Topologies Against Two-Level Systems

The steady growth of installed wind power which reached 200 GW capacity in 2010, together with the up-scaling of the single wind turbine power capability - 7 MW's has been announced by manufacturers - has pushed the research and development of power converters towards full scale power conversion, lowered cost pr kW, and increased power density and the need for higher reliability. Substantial efforts are made to comply with the more stringent grid codes, especially grid faults ride-through and reactive power injection, which challenges power converter topologies, because the need for crowbar protection and/or power converter over-rating has been seen in the case of a doubly-fed induction generator. In this paper, power converter technologies are reviewed with focus on single/multi-cell power converter topologies. Further, case studies on the Low Voltage Ride Through demand to power converter technology are presented including a discussion on reliability. It is concluded that as the power level increases in wind turbines, medium voltage power converters will be a dominant power converter configuration.

Power electronics converters for wind turbine systems

Advances in power electronics enable efficient and flexible processing of electric power in the application of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, adjustable-speed drives, etc. More and more efforts are devoted to better power electronic systems in terms of reliability to ensure high availability, long lifetime, sufficient robustness, low maintenance cost and low cost of energy. However, the reliability predictions are still dominantly according to outdated models and terms, such as MIL-HDBK-217H handbook models, Mean-Time-To-Failure (MTTF), and Mean-Time-Between-Failures (MTBF). A collection of methodologies based on Physics-of-Failure (PoF) approach and mission profile analysis are presented in this paper to perform reliability-oriented design of power electronic systems. The corresponding design procedures and reliability prediction models are provided. Further on, a case study on a 2.3 MW wind power converter is discussed with emphasis on the reliability critical components IGBTs. Different aspects of improving the reliability of the power converter are mapped. Finally, the challenges and opportunities to achieve more reliable power electronic systems are addressed.

This paper evaluates three-level topologies as alternatives to two-level topologies in converters for low-voltage applications. Topologies, semiconductor losses, filter aspects, part count, initial cost, and life-cycle cost are compared for a grid interface, a conventional drive application, and a high-speed drive application.
