Tests were conducted on ten concrete beam-interior column frame assemblies subjected to static cyclic loading simulating the effect of severe earthquake loading. The frame members were near full-scale and contained a range of proportions of prestressing steel and nonprestressed steel. Information applicable to seismic design concerning inelastic flexural deformation capacity and degree of damage was obtained. A central prestressing tendon at mid-depth in the beam passing through the joint was shown to be effective in contributing to joint core shear strength. Several design recommendations are proposed.

D analyses of structures responding elastically to ground motions recorded during severe earthquakes have shown that the theoretical response inertia loads are generally significantly greater than the static design lateral loads recommended by codes. Hence, structures designed for the lateral earthquake loads recommended by codes can only survive severe earthquakes if they have sufficient ductility to absorb and dissipate seismic energy by inelastic deformations.'-" Prestressed concrete has been widely used for structures carrying gravity loads but has not had the same acceptance for use in structural systems which resist seismic loading. Part of this caution in the use of prestressed concrete for earthquake resistant structures has been due to the paucity of experimental and theoretical studies of prestressed concrete structures subjected to seismic type loading. A survey of the research which has been conducted on the seismic resistance of prestressed concrete was published in 1970. 9 Parmeio and Hawkins" have published more recent reviews of the state of the art of seismic resistance of prestressed and precast concrete. There has been a lack of detailed building code provisions in the United States for the seismic design of prestressed and precast concrete. For example, the ACI Code,' the SEAOC recommendations, 2 the Uniform Building Code, 3 and the tentative provisions of the ATC 4 all contain special provisions for the seismic design of cast-in-place reinforced concrete structures, but do not have

Ductility of Prestressed and Partially Prestressed Concrete Beam Sections

The nonlinear dynamic responses of two reinforced and six prestressed concrete versions of a twenty story frame structure to a strong earthquake are found, using a step-by-step integration technique. A special model beam is used to represent the concrete members. The effects of different member properties, different amounts of hysteretic damping, and two different viscous damping mechanisms on response and energy dissipation are compared. The prestressed concrete structures have higher lateral displacements and inter-story drifts, but lower ductility requirements, and the comparative results suggest that a prestressed structure of the type analyzed could withstand a strong earthquake.

The use of prestressed concrete components has been accepted for many years for structures under gravity loading. The applications of the material are increasing rapidly, encouraged by such advantages as the possibility of pleasing architectural forms, and the suitability of prestressed concrete to modern prefabricated construction. However the use of prestressed concrete in primary seismic resistant elements such as shear walls and frames has created considerable controversy. This review is a historical trace of the approach of design and research engineers to the suitability or otherwise of prestressed concrete for earthquake resistance. It discusses such fundamental properties as stiffness, damping, energy absorption and dissipation, and ductility, all of which will affect the response and hence the structural behaviour of prestressed concrete buildings under earthquake loading.
