The effects of machining conditions on the flank wear of tin-coated high speed steel tool inserts

There is a continuing requirement for improved bearing performance for both commercial and military applications. Service temperatures are increasing steadily due to increased power requirements and corrosion of components remains a major concern as well, particularly for bearings in military systems. In our ongoing study, a number of different coatings were applied to VIM–VAR M50 bearing steel to improve both corrosion resistance and rolling contact fatigue behaviour. This report deals with coatings from the ion beam assisted deposition (I BAD) of TiN, details of the coating process, and test results obtained. The rolling contact fatigue performance of IBAD TiN coated M50 samples, measured with a ball/rod tester at a contact Hertzian stress of 5420 MN m-2, is discussed. Preliminary data on corrosion properties are also presented.

Adhesion of wear resistant hard coatings to steel substrates

The scratch test is widely used to assess the adhesion of ceramic coatings deposited on cermet and alloy substrates by both physical vapour deposition and chemical vapour deposition (CVD). It has been observed during such tests that, depending on the coating type, complete coating removal from the scratch channels can be preceded by flaking of the coating at the edges of the channels. An attempt has been made to ascertain, for CVD coated powder metallurgy (PM) high speed steel (HSS) cutting tool inserts, whether a relationship exists between the presence/absence and type of pre-critical load coating flaking observed during scratch testing and interfacial compositional variations determined by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES)
