Methods and systems for processing touch inputs are disclosed. The invention in one respect includes reading data from a multipoint sensing device such as a multipoint touch screen where the data pertains to touch input with respect to the multipoint sensing device, and identifying at least one multipoint gesture based on the data from the multipoint sensing device.

Gestures for touch sensitive input devices

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for simultaneously tracking multiple finger (202-204) and palm (206, 207) contacts as hands approach, touch, and slide across a proximity-sensing, compliant, and flexible multi-touch surface (2). The surface consists of compressible cushion (32), dielectric electrode (33), and circuitry layers. A simple proximity transduction circuit is placed under each electrode to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio and to reduce wiring complexity. Scanning and signal offset removal on electrode array produces low-noise proximity images. Segmentation processing of each proximity image constructs a group of electrodes corresponding to each distinguishable contacts and extracts shape, position and surface proximity features for each group. Groups in successive images which correspond to the same hand contact are linked by a persistent path tracker (245) which also detects individual contact touchdown and liftoff. Classification of intuitive hand configurations and motions enables unprecedented integration of typing, resting, pointing, scrolling, 3D manipulation, and handwriting into a versatile, ergonomic computer input device.

Method and apparatus for integrating manual input

An intelligent automated assistant system engages with the user in an integrated, conversational manner using natural language dialog, and invokes external services when appropriate to obtain information or perform various actions. The system can be implemented using any of a number of different platforms, such as the web, email, smartphone, and the like, or any combination thereof. In one embodiment, the system is based on sets of interrelated domains and tasks, and employs additional functionally powered by external services with which the system can interact.

Mode-based graphical user interfaces for touch sensitive input devices

A method for interpreting at least two consecutive gestures includes providing a sensing assembly having at least one photoreceiver and a plurality of phototransmitters, wherein each phototransmitter is positioned to emit infrared light away from the electronic device about a corresponding central transmission axis, wherein each central transmission axis is oriented in a different direction with respect to the others, and controlling emission of infrared light by each of the phototransmitters during each of a plurality of time periods. During each of the plurality of phototransmitters and for each of the plurality of time periods, a corresponding measured signal is generated which is indicative of a respective amount of infrared light which originated from that phototransmitter during that time period and was reflected by the external object prior to being received by a photoreceiver. The measured signals are evaluated to identity a first gesture, and the electronic device is controlled in response to identification of the first gesture according to a first mode of operation. A parameter of a second gesture is also determined, and the electronic device is controlled in response to the determined parameter of the second gesture according to a second mode of operation.

Electronic device with sensing assembly and method for interpreting offset gestures

A user interface (103) for an electronic device (101) (and corresponding method) is arranged and constructed for intuitive control of interface functionality. The user interface includes: a user interface component, e.g. speaker, microphone, display backlighting, etc., that is one of a plurality of user interface components (105); interface circuitry (117) coupled to the user interface components (105); and a sensor (129) located in a position that is logically associated with, e.g. proximate to or co-located with, the user interface component and configured to provide an output signal when the sensor (129) is triggered, e.g. by proximity to a user, where the output signal facilitates, via for example a controller (143), a change in an operating mode of one or more of the user interface components (105).

Intuitive user interface and method

A portable electronic device having one or more proximity sensors. The portable electronic device comprises a housing, one or more signal emitters to direct source signal(s) based on the orientation of the housing, and one or more signal receivers to receive return signals corresponding to the source signal(s). For one embodiment, the device may include multiple signal emitters and a sensor to identify an orientation of the housing. The appropriate signal emitter may be selected based on the orientation of the housing as identified by the sensor. For another embodiment, the device may include a mechanism to redirect a source signal from a signal emitter in an appropriate direction based on the orientation of the housing.

A portable communication device ( 100 ) that has a processing section ( 208 ) to control operation of the portable communication device ( 100 ) in response to an input signal (TS_INPUT) and a user interface having a touch sensitive input device ( 128 ) for generating the input signal (TS_INPUT), also has a sensor ( 134 ). The sensor ( 134 ) disables the touch sensitive input device ( 128 ) from generating the input signal (TS_INPUT) when the portable communication device ( 100 ) is positioned in close proximity to a user and, thereby, preventing inadvertent actuations while the user holds the portable communication device ( 100 ) against his or her head to facilitate communication.

Sensor controlled user interface for portable communication device

An electronic device can include detectors for altering the presentation of data on one or more displays. In a wearable electronic device, a flexible housing can be configured to enfold about an appendage of a user, such as a user's wrist. A display can disposed along a major face of the flexible housing. A control circuit can be operable with the display. A gaze detector can be included to detect a gaze direction, and optionally a gaze cone. An orientation detector can be configured to detect an orientation of the electronic device relative to the user. The control circuit can alter a presentation of data on the display in response to a detected gaze direction, in response to detected orientation of the wearable electronic device relative to the user, in response to touch or gesture input, or combinations thereof. Secondary displays can be hingedly coupled to the electronic device.
