BACKGROUND
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affected academic-practice partnerships in multiple ways. This article examines how the pandemic affected partnerships at one college of nursing.


METHOD
A survey on the effects of COVID-19 on academic-practice partnerships was sent to all faculty (n = 228). Data were analyzed using a mixed-method approach.


RESULTS
Of 69 surveys that were completed, 38 faculty reported 52 unique partnerships during the 2019-2020 academic year. Of the 52 partnerships, 63% (n = 33) had changed and 12% (n = 6) were newly established partnerships in response to COVID-19. Common changes included temporary suspension of activities (n = 13) and a change (n = 9) or decrease (n = 7) in activities. Major themes included clinical disruptions and transitioning to telehealth and online services.


CONCLUSION
COVID-19 created challenges for academic-practice partnerships but also generated opportunities for nursing education to contribute to the pandemic response and meet evolving population and organizational needs. [J Nurs Educ. 2022;61(9):533-536.].

Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Academic-Practice Partnerships: Implications for Nursing Education.

Background: Several definitions and guiding principles for nursing academic-practice partnerships exist. Problem: There remains a gap between academic-practice partnership definitions and practical operational models, thereby limiting schools of nursing ability to engage in productive partnerships. This article describes the development and validation of a novel Operational Model for Nursing Academic-Practice Partnerships. Approach: An email survey of all nursing faculty (n = 228) identified quantity and types of faculty-led academic-practice partnerships. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were analyzed via thematic analysis conducted by 2 members of the project team and validated by the full project team. Outcomes: The Operational Model for Academic-Practice Partnerships was created and is comprised of 8 partnership strategies: innovation, embedded faculty, joint appointment, consultant, independent practice, volunteer, scholarship, and clinical site development. Conclusion: We offer this model as a framework to structure the development, implementation, and evaluation of academic-practice partnerships at nursing schools. 

Development and Validation of an Operational Model for Nursing Academic-Practice Partnerships

Introduction People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For many PEH it is impossible to isolate due to the lack of permanent housing. Therefore, an isolation facility for SARS-CoV-2 positive PEH was opened in Berlin, Germany, in May 2020, offering medical care, opioid and alcohol substitution therapy and social services. This study aimed to assess the needs of the admitted patients and requirements of the facility. Materials and methods This was a retrospective patient record study carried out in the isolation facility for PEH in Berlin, from December 2020 to June 2021. We extracted demographic and clinical data including observed psychological distress from records of all PEH tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR. Data on duration and completion of isolation and the use of the facilities’ services were analyzed. The association of patients’ characteristics with the completion of isolation was assessed by Student’s t-test or Fisher’s exact test. Results A total of 139 patients were included in the study (89% male, mean age 45 years, 41% with comorbidities, 41% non-German speakers). 81% of patients were symptomatic (median duration 5 days, range 1–26). The median length of stay at the facility was 14 days (range 2–41). Among the patients, 80% had non-COVID-19 related medical conditions, 46% required alcohol substitution and 17% opioid substitution therapy. Three patients were hospitalized due to low oxygen saturation. No deaths occurred. Psychological distress was observed in 20%, and social support services were used by 65% of PEH. The majority (82%) completed the required isolation period according to the health authority’s order. We did not observe a statistically significant association between completion of the isolation period and sociodemographic characteristics. Conclusion The specialized facility allowed PEH a high compliance with completion of the isolation period. Medical care, opioid and alcohol substitution, psychological care, language mediation and social support are essential components to address the specific needs of PEH. Besides contributing to infection prevention and control, isolation facilities may allow better access to medical care for SARS-CoV-2 infected PEH with possibly positive effects on the disease course.

A COVID-19 isolation facility for people experiencing homelessness in Berlin, Germany: a retrospective patient record study

The COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating impact on non-sheltered homeless and housing-insecure individuals. This report details the development of a Chicago-based isolation shelter designed for people experiencing homelessness and recovering from COVID-19. The model is informative concerning the rapid development of services for people marginalized by the health care system.
