Population Ageing and Health in India

The purpose of this study is to examine gender difference in self-rated health among older population in India. Data from the 60th round of National Sample Survey Organization on 34,831 older persons are used. The present study measured self-rated health categorized as “poor” and “good.” We used bivariate and binary logistic regression model to investigate differences and factors that best explain and predict the self-rated health among older persons. Results show that poor self-rated health was more common among women than men. Furthermore, the poor self-rated health was higher among Muslims, Scheduled Castes, and women residing in rural areas. Findings suggest a clear need for gender-sensitive health interventions.

Determinants of Gender Differences in Self-Rated Health Among Older Population: Evidence From India

The increasing graying of India’s population raises concerns about the welfare and health status of the aged. One important source of information of health status of the elderly is the National Sample Survey Rounds on Morbidity and Health Care Expenditure. Using unit level data for 1995-96 and 2004 this paper has examined changes in reported health status of elderly in India and analyzed their relationship with living arrangements and extent of economic dependency. It appears that even after controlling for factors like caste, education, age, economic status and place of residence, there has been deterioration in self-perceived current health status of elderly. This paper argues that, although there have been changes in the economic condition and traditional living arrangements - with a decline in co-residential arrangements - this is not enough to explain the decline in reported health status and calls for a closer look at narratives of neglect being voiced in developing countries.

Is health status of elderly worsening in india? A comparison of successive Rounds of national Sample survey data

In India, there are strong and intimate links between traditional notions of caste, purity and pollution and the preparation and consumption of food. This article studies trajectories of social change within small South Indian eating places, popularly known as Udupi hotels. During the second half of the 20th century such enterprises absorbed a large number of unskilled migrants, mainly from Karnataka's coastal belt. We explore the relationship between caste and employability within the industry and the impact of caste on individual career progress. Combining case studies of enterprises from villages, small towns and cities with data from in-depth interviews with a sample of hotel workers, we argue that small South Indian eating places are elusive social arenas that can shed new light on the nature, persistence and change in caste-based exclusion in important markets for unskilled labour in modern India.

This paper describes the methodology for estimating recent fertility levels at the district level in India based on the 2011 Census figures. Due to the absence of reliable vital statistics for Indian districts, fertility levels are assessed using a set of indirect methods. Using mortality estimates and the child population aged 0-6 years to estimate the number of births during the seven years preceding the census, figures for crude birth rates and fertility rates are derived for all Indian districts. The results are compared with those derived from the 2001 Census. Our analysis points, in particular, to the significant population overcount in Jammu and Kashmir during the 2011 Census and the continuous but extremely slow process of fertility decline in India.

Fertility at District Level in India: Lessons from the 2011 Census

Over the last few decades both fertility and mortality rates have been falling but the decline of mortality was strong enough to offset the fall in fertility rates. The 2001 Census however gives a clear indication that India is passing through the last phase of fertility transition moving towards moderate to low fertility. Fertility declines have not however been uniform across the country and the differential rates are mainly responsible for the differentials in population growth rates across states and union territories.
