A self-contained ventilation apparatus is disclosed for ventilating buildings, e.g., patient rooms such as hospital rooms, waiting rooms, hospital operating rooms, doctors' offices, and clinics, especially rooms contaminated with infectious microorganisms. One or more blowers is provided. When there are two blowers, a first blower is provided for discharging room air to the atmosphere and a second blower is provided for introducing fresh outside air to the room to provide a continuous supply of fresh air to the room which is free of disease organisms. Both streams of air pass through an air-to-air heat exchanger to adjust the temperature of the incoming air to approach that exhausted from the room. When filters are used, both currents of air are preferably filtered, e.g., with a high efficiency particle air (HEPA) filter. Provision is made for automatically maintaining room air pressure at the desired value (typically below that of surrounding rooms) as filters gradually become clogged with dust. Supplemental heat or cold is supplied to incoming air by locating semiconductive thermoelectric cooling modules between incoming and outgoing air streams. Optional thermoelectric modules also dehumidify or warm incoming air depending on the season.

Recirculating exhaust system

A system and method for controlling the exhaust flow rate in an exhaust ventilation system including an exhaust hood positioned above a cooking appliance. The method can include measuring a temperature of the exhaust air in the vicinity of the cooking appliance, and measuring a radiant temperature of a surface of the cooking appliance, and determining an appliance status based on the measured exhaust air temperature and radiant temperature, and controlling the exhaust flow rate in response to the determined appliance status.

Exhaust flow control system and method

An exhaust chamber for an arc resistant cabinet directs high temperature, expanding gases away from locations where personnel are likely to be present. The exhaust chamber may have an open top, directing gases outward through the center of the exhaust chamber's top. Alternatively, the exhaust chamber may be completely enclosed, directing expanding gases through a duct.

An autonomous ventilation system includes a variable-speed exhaust fan, a controller, an exhaust hood, and an infrared radiation (“IR”) sensor. The exhaust fan removes air contaminants from an area. The controller is coupled to the exhaust fan and adjusts the speed of the exhaust fan. The exhaust hood is coupled to the exhaust fan and directs air contaminants to the exhaust fan. The IR sensor is coupled to the controller, detects changes in IR index in a zone below the exhaust hood, and communicates information relating to detected changes in IR index to the controller. The controller adjusts the speed of the exhaust fan in response to information relating to detected changes in IR index. The autonomous ventilation system also includes an alignment laser to indicate a point at which the IR sensor is aimed and a field-of-view (“FOV”) indicator to illuminate the zone in which the IR sensor detects changes in IR index.

Autonomous Ventilation System

An air ventilation and cleaning system for cooking equipment having an exhaust hood disposed thereover in a building having a heating-ventilating and air-conditioning system for treating the air in the building. The exhaust hood includes a collection chamber and an exhaust chamber with an initial filter means mounted therebetween. An exhaust fan draws air loaded with cooking vapors, odors, fumes, smoke and other pollutants collected in the collection chamber through the filter means and the exhaust chamber, and out through an exhaust passage provided with a water-wash filter and a final filter, and then to the atmosphere. A source of fresh air provides a predetermined amount of fresh makeup air to the collection chamber. A temperature control unit is connected to another source of fresh air, and to the return air duct of the heating-ventilating and air-conditioning system of the building or a room in the building, for providing a combination of fresh air and tempered air to an air curtain passage for forming an air curtain along the front side of the exhaust hood.
