TL;DR: In this article, the effect of fluid film damping in the bearing and structural damping on the dynamic unbalance response of a Jeffcot rotor has been investigated, and the results indicate that damping enhances the unbalancing response at certain frequency bands and shifts the peak unbalanced response to a higher frequency.
Abstract: The effect of fluid film damping in the bearings and the structural damping in the rotor shaft on the dynamic unbalance response** of a Jeffcot rotor is studied. The direct and cross-coupled coefficients of stiffness and damping in the bearings are included in the analysis. The effects of structural damping in the shaft in addition to any applied damping are approximated by an equivalent viscous damping. The results indicate that damping enhances the unbalance response at certain frequency bands and shifts the peak unbalance response to a higher frequency. The bearing damping has significant influence on rotors having two distinct critical speeds compared to rotors which do not exhibit critical speeds. The effect of increasing the shaft stiffness relative to the bearing stiffnesses is to reduce the unbalance response with or without damping. It is also shown that the effect of shaft damping on the unbalance response is insignificant when the effective viscous damping ratio of the system is high.
