A beam control system characterized by first and second independently controllable light beams which are alternately and separately scanned across a predetermined focal surface by first and second elements of a dual mirror scanning assembly; the dual scanning feature permitting spot position corrections to be made to the nonscanning beam during the period that the remaining beam is in its scanning mode.

Beam control system

A non-contact laser engraving apparatus for reproducing on a workpiece an image, the image being formed on or in proximate relationship to a specularly reflecting surface of a cyclindrical mirror being scanned laterally by a laser beam with the mirror in a focal plane. The image is formed of a diffusely reflective substance with the beam then being appropriately brought to a focus at the workpiece. Translation mechanism are provided for providing relative movement between the workpiece and the image for recreating the image as an engraving in the workpiece. Several embodiments are illustrated utilizing mirrors or lenses or a combination of both for providing the scanning and focusing functions of the apparatus.

Non contact laser engraving apparatus

A bearing assembly for supporting the spindle of a machine tool includes a single row tapered roller bearing and a closure at each end of the bearing for isolating the interior of the bearing from the surrounding atmosphere. A liquid refrigerant and lubricating oil are mixed in the closure at the small ends of the rollers, and are directed into the space between the tapered raceways. This refrigerant, upon encountering the tapered rollers, the raceways along which the rollers roll, and the thrust rib against which the large ends of the rollers bear, vaporizes and extracts heat from those bearing components, thereby enabling the bearing to operate at a generally uniform temperature close to room temperature. The vaporized refrigerant flows through a port in the closure at the large ends of the rollers and then into a heat exchanger where it is condensed, the liquid refrigerant being then directed to the closure at the small ends of the rollers. The lubricating oil is likewise recirculated from the closure at the large roller ends to the closure at the small roller ends where it is again mixed with the refrigerant. The refrigerant and oil may be mixed in an inwardly opening trough carried by the cage beyond the small roller ends and may be directed through channels in the cage bridges to the outer raceway and the thrust rib.

Refrigerant cooled tapered roller bearing assembly

A display system utilizing modulated and steered laser beams to scan a display screen is described. The system is capable of operating with the video and deflection signals of conventional color television signals. A dual-beam intensity modulator at the output of each laser is used to resolve the beam therefrom into first and second components. The components are alternately modulated with the video information and spatially separated. These components are directed, at appropriate angles, to a rotating mirror-type horizontal beam scanner which causes the components to alternately scan in a horizontal plane. A vertical beam scanner is positioned at the output of the horizontal scanner. The components alternately emerging from the vertical beam scanner are directed to and raster scan the display screen.

Dual beam laser display device employing polygonal mirror

The invention relates to very high-speed facsimile production suitable for use in reproducing on Earth a photograph taken by a rocket &c. The recording and reproducing systems use exactly the same scanning system, Fig. 1, showing its use in the reproducing system. A light beam from a gas laser 10 is modulated by a Kerr cell 11 in accordance with modulating signals received from the recording system. The intensity modulated beam is broadened by lenses 12 and 13 and is split into two equal halves 16, 17 by beam splitter 14. The two beams are focused by lenses 20 and 21 respectively and directed by mirrors 30 and 34 on to mirrors 27 and 28 respectively. Mirrors 27 and 28 are in the form of equilateral prisms, with one prism turned by 60 degrees with respect to the other, and both rotating at 2500 r.p.s. about a common axis. The two beams reflected by the mirrors 27 and 18 fall and are focused on a photo-sensitive film 23 moving in a direction 25 and formed into an arc extending over an angle of 120 degrees with respect to the rotation axis of the mirrors. The system is such that when the beam from mirror 27 has just finished its downward scan of the film, that from mirror 28 is just beginning its downward scan at the top of the film. The film is thus scanned alternatively by the two beams, such that together with the motion of the film, a facsimile is produced on the film. At the recording system, Fig. 2 (not shown), the two unmodulated light beams alternately scan the picture (35) to be reproduced and the modulated light passing through the picture is collected by a bundle (37) of glass fibres and fed to a photo-sensitive cell (39) to produce the modulation signal for transmission to the reproducing system.

High speed facsimile method and apparatus

A high speed rotating system driven by a motor which constitutes a source of heat. The system has bearings of porous material through which a liquid coolant is fed and in which heat of friction causes vaporization of the lubricant and hence cooling of the bearing and dissipation of heat from the motor due to the fact that the latent heat of vaporization is derived from the bearing surface and immediately adjacent areas.
