A global perspective on the use, sales, exposure pathways, occurrence, fate and effects of veterinary antibiotics (VAs) in the environment

Significant concerns have been raised over pollution of antibiotics including tetracyclines in aquatic environments in recent years. Graphene oxide (GO) is a potential effective absorbent for tetracycline antibiotics and can be used to remove them from aqueous solution. Tetracycline strongly deposited on the GO surface via π-π interaction and cation-π bonding. The adsorption isotherm fits Langmuir and Temkin models well, and the theoretical maximum of adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir model is 313 mg g(-1), which is approximately in a close agreement with the measured data. The kinetics of adsorption fits pseudo-second-order model perfectly, and it has a better rate constant of sorption (k), 0.065 g mg(-1) h(-1), than other adsorbents. The adsorption capacities of tetracycline on GO decreased with the increase in pH or Na(+) concentration. The adsorption isotherms of oxytetracycline and doxycycline on GO were discussed and compared.

Adsorption and removal of tetracycline antibiotics from aqueous solution by graphene oxide

The quality of water is continuously deteriorating due to its increasing toxic threat to humans and the environment. It is imperative to perform treatment of wastewater in order to remove pollutants and to get good quality water. Carbon materials like porous carbon, carbon nanotubes and fullerene have been extensively used for advanced treatment of wastewaters. In recent years, carbon nanomaterials have become promising adsorbents for water treatment. This review attempts to compile relevant knowledge about the adsorption activities of porous carbon, carbon nanotubes and fullerene related to various organic and inorganic pollutants from aqueous solutions. A detailed description of the preparation and treatment methods of porous carbon, carbon nanotubes and fullerene along with relevant applications and regeneration is also included.

Sorption of pollutants by porous carbon, carbon nanotubes and fullerene- An overview

The occurrence and transport of 12 antibiotics (from the tetracycline, sulfonamide, quinolone, and macrolide families) was studied in a 72-km stretch of the Haihe River, China, and in six of its tributaries. Aqueous and sediment samples were analyzed by HPLC-MS/MS. Sulfonamides were detected at the highest concentrations (24-385 ng/L) and highest frequencies (76-100%). Eight of the 12 antibiotics likely originated from veterinary applications in swine farms and fishponds, and concentrations at these sources (0.12-47 μg/L) were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than in the effluent of local wastewater treatment plants. Sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) was detected in all swine farm and fishpond samples (maximum concentration 47 μg/L), which suggests its potential usefulness to indicate livestock source pollution in the Haihe River basin. Hydrological and chemical factors that may influence antibiotic distribution in the Haihe River were considered by multiple regression analysis. River flow rate exerted the most significant effect on the first-order attenuation coefficient (K) for sulfonamides, quinolones, and macrolides, with higher flow rates resulting in higher K, probably due to dilution. For tetracyclines, sediment total organic matter and cation exchange capacity exerted a greater impact on K than flow rate, indicating that adsorption to sediments plays an important role in attenuating tetracycline migration. Overall, the predominance of sulfonamides in the Haihe River underscores the need to consider regulating their veterinary use and improving the management and treatment of associated releases.

The removal of 11 antibiotics of 6 classes, that is, two β-lactams (ampicillin and cefalexin), two sulfonamides (sulfamethoxazole and sulfadiazine), three fluoroquinolones (norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin), one tetracyclines (tetracycline), two macorlides (roxithromycin and anhydro-erythromycin), and one others (trimethoprim), in activated sludge process was investigated using two series of batch reactors treating freshwater and saline sewage respectively. At environmental relevant concentrations tested in this study, biodegradation and adsorption were the major removal routes for the target antibiotics, where volatilization and hydrolysis were neglectable. Among the 11 target antibiotics, cefalexin and the two sulfonamides were predominantly removed by biodegradation in both freshwater and saline sewage systems. Biodegradation and Adsorption of Antibiotics in the Activated Sludge Process

Sorption interactions of three high-use tetracycline antibiotics (oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, tetracycline) with montmorillonite and kaolinite clays were investigated undervaried pH and ionic strength conditions. Sorption edges were best described with a model that included cation exchange plus surface complexation of zwitterion forms of these compounds. Zwitterion sorption was accompanied by proton uptake, was more favorable on acidic clay, and was relatively insensitive to ionic strength effects. Calcium salts promoted oxytetracycline sorption at alkaline pHs likely by a surface-bridging mechanism. Substituent effects among the compounds in the tetracycline class had only minor effects on sorption edges and isotherms under the same solution pH and ionic strength conditions. At low ionic strength, greater sorption to montmorillonite than kaolinite was observed at all pHs tested, even after normalizing for cation exchange capacity. These results indicate that soil and sediment sorption models for tetracyclines, and other pharmaceuticals with similar chemistry, must account for solution speciation and the presence of other competitor ions in soil or sediment pore waters.

Modeling Tetracycline Antibiotic Sorption to Clays

The sorption interactions of oxytetracycline with goethite, hematite, and two iron oxide-rich soils were investigated using batch sorption experiments. Oxytetracycline sorption coefficients for goethite and hematite increased with pH to maximum values at pH ∼8. The sorption edge shape and desorption treatments were consistent with a surface complexation mechanism and could be described by the interaction of divalent anion species with the oxide surface. Oxytetracycline sorption to Georgeville and Orangeburg Ultisol soils decreased with pH. Chemical digestion treatments were used to deduce that soil sorption occurred by complexation to oxide coatings on clay and quartz grains. These results indicate that sorption models must consider the interaction of oxytetracycline, and other similar ionogenic compounds, with soil oxide components in addition to clays and organic matter when predicting sorption in whole soils.
