An encoded information reading (EIR) terminal can comprise a microprocessor electrically coupled to a system/data bus, a memory communicatively coupled to the microprocessor, an EIR device, a multi-band antenna, and a wireless communication interface. The EIR device can be provided by a bar code reading device, an RFID reading device, or a card reading device. The EIR device can be configured to output raw message data containing an encoded message and/or output decoded message data corresponding to an encoded message. The wireless communication interface can comprise a radio frequency (RF) front end electrically coupled to the multi-band antenna. The RF front end can comprise a micro-electromechanical (MEMS) filter array including one or more band-pass filter. Each band-pass filter of the MEMS filter array can be electrically coupled to a bias voltage source or an oscillating signal source. The RF front end can be electrically coupled to an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter and/or to a digital-to-analog (D/A) converter. The wireless communication interface can be configured to transmit radio signals in two or more frequency regulatory domains and/or receive radio signals in two or more frequency regulatory domains. The multi-band antenna can in one embodiment be provided by a meta-material antenna.

The LWAs may be configured to communicate the RF signals in a desired direction. The LWAs may comprise microstrip or coplanar waveguides, where a cavity height of the one or more leaky wave antennas is dependent on spacing between conductive lines in the waveguides. The present disclosure relates to envelope power supply calibration of a multi-mode RF power amplifier (PA) to ensure adequate headroom when operating using one of multiple communications modes. The communications modes may include multiple modulation modes, a half-duplex mode, a full-duplex mode, or any combination thereof. As such, each communications mode may have specific peak-to-average power and linearity requirements for the multi-mode RF PA. As a result, each communications mode may have corresponding envelope power supply headroom requirements. The calibration may include determining a saturation operating constraint based on calibration data obtained during saturated operation of the multi-mode RF PA. During operation of the multi-mode RF PA, the envelope power supply may be restricted to provide a minimum allowable magnitude based on an RF signal level of the multi-mode RF PA, the communications mode, and the saturation operating constraint to provide adequate headroom.

It is accomplished by a distributed amplifier with proper turn on and off of the transistor devices via an RF detector. Neither RF power combiner/splitter, DSP nor envelope amplifier is utilized. A MMIC prototype was designed and fabricated using a GaAs HBT process to verify this efficient, linear and broadband PA architecture and it measured 3% EVM and 24–25% PAE at 19.6dBm from 2.3GHz to 2.7GHz using a 54Mbps 64QAM OFDM modulation signal.
