Abstract: Solid-state Si and Al NMR, using high-resolution techniques, have been used to examine the dehydroxylation of the 2:1 phyllosilicate mineral pyrophyllite. Si results are consistent with the maintenance of the 2:1 layer structure in the dehydroxylate phase and provide data on chemical shift/structure variation in sheet silicates. The change in aluminum coordination from six to five on dehydroxylation results in the loss of the sharp Al octahedral resonance. However, no signal for five-coordinate aluminum was observed, presumably through substantial broadening caused by the less symmetrical aluminum environment.
