A stacked array magnifier (SAM) forms a magnified, demagnified or unit image of an object. The SAM includes one or more non-refractive lenslet arrays and one or more refractive lenslet arrays to form a plurality of lenslet channels. Each lenslet channel has at least one refractive lenslet and at least one non-refractive lenslet. SAMs are combined and tiled to form a scaleable display of flat panel displays. Multiple SAMs are used to increase magnification selectively. Hybrid lenslet arrays of the invention are also useable for optical processing and non-imaging applications.

Lenslet array systems and methods

An exit pupil extender wherein the relative amount of different color components in the exit beam is more consistent with that of the input beam. In order to compensate for the uneven amount in the diffracted color components in the exit beam, the exit pupil extender, comprises a plurality of layers having additional diffraction gratings so as to increase the amount of diffracted light for those color components with a lower amount. Additionally, color filters disposed between layers to reduce the diffracted light components with a higher amount.

Method and system for beam expansion in a display device

A holographic optical device (2) includes a light-transmissive substrate (2a), a first holographic optical element (Hs), and a second holographic optical element (Hr) that is laterally disposed on the substrate from the first holographic optical element. At least one of the holographic optical elements is a complex diffraction grating that can handle a multiplicity of plane and/or spherical waves arriving from a range of angles, and having a range of wavelengths. Applications for the device include a wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer, an image reconstructor, a beam expander/compressor, and a visor/head-up display.

Holographic optical devices

A waveguide hologram illumination system is based on thin substrate waveguides bearing a hologram on the surface through which light is diffracted out. A light source is optically coupled to the waveguide such that light emitted from the source is caused to propagate along the waveguide, being diffracted out at intersections with the surface of the waveguide on which the hologram is formed. The selective emission through the hologram can be advantageously used to illuminate display holograms or spatial light modulators. Provisions are made for rendering the amount of light emitted through the hologram uniform along the length of the hologram.

Waveguide hologram illuminators

A multichip module having high density optical and electrical interconnections between integrated circuit chips includes a substrate overlaying an array of integrated circuit chips. An optical transmitter generates a first optical beam through the substrate and an optical detector receives a second optical beam through the substrate. A hologram is positioned in the path of at least one of the first and second optical beams. An array of electrical contact pads is located on the substrate corresponding to the array of electrical contact pads on the respective integrated circuit chips. A pattern of electrical interconnection lines is located on the substrate for electrically interconnecting the integrated circuit chips. A solder bump between electrical contact pads on the substrate and on the integrated circuit chips establish electrical connections between the substrate and the integrated circuit chips, and also facilitate alignment of the integrated circuit chips with respect to the substrate. The optical transmitter and detector may be mounted on/in the substrate or on/in the integrated circuit chips. The optical transmitter and detector may also be used to provide optical connections external to the microelectronic module, using a holographic substrate to optically link modules. The substrate may also be used to establish optical alignment of the hologram to an underlying optical emitter and/or optical detector without establishing electrical connections thereto.

Microelectronic module having optical and electrical interconnects

The present invention discloses a reconfigurable optical interconnect apptus that redirects an optical beam through embedded holographic elements of a substrate-mode hologram to connecting information processors or to photonic switching devices. The apparatus includes a substrate-mode hologram, including a polarization insensitive input hologram member, one or more embedded polarization sensitive hologram members that couple transmitted diffracted or non-diffracted light to respective optical receivers. The optical receivers further couple the light out of the substrate-mode hologram or to cascaded similar apparatus. The method includes processing an incident beam of polarized light through a controlled polarization modulator, through an optical information encoder, such as a spatial light modulator, then further processing the polarized light through the substrate-mode hologram. The apparatus has advantages of being compact and expandable into larger systems.

Reconfigurable substrate-mode holographic interconnect apparatus and method
