The predator fauna of alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., was studied at Ithaca, N.Y., during 1966–69. Predators are separated into species that completed their life cycle on alfalfa (primary), species whose adults took prey from the plants but bred elsewhere (secondary), and species not observed to capture prey on alfalfa (incidental). Seasonal occurrences and prey records are given for the 19 primary species and the secondary species whose prey were identified.

Studies on the arthropod fauna of alfalfa: vii. predaceous insects

— The monographic revision of North Korean ants is provided fist time in the World literature. This work was based on the investigation of very rich material collected by Polish and Hungarian entomologists in North Korea in 1959–1990. The collections are kept in the Museum and Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, in the Institute of Environmental Sciences of the Jagiellonian University, Cracow, and in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. In total, these unique collections include more than 70 thousand specimens collected in almost all regions of North Korea. Altogether, 99 ant species from 35 genera and 7 subfamilies, including 6 newly described species and 35 new to North Korea have been found; 17 species have been excluded from the list of the North Korean fauna. The monograph includes review of species, taxonomic and zoogeographical analysis of the Korean myrmecofauna, and the comparison of this fauna with that of the adjacent regions of Eastern Asia. A key for determination of all taxa of North Korean ants is also provided.

Monographic revision of the ants [Hymenoptera: Formicidae] of North Korea

The aim of this work is to propose the use of the Spheciformes wasps (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Ampulicidae, Sphecidae and Crabronidae) as indicators of European biodiversity. One advantage of studying this group of insects lies in the regulating effects that such wasps have on other insect populations. We discuss the applicability of seven criteria, taken from the literature, to use the Spheciformes wasps as an indicator group, with respect to which parameters this group offers guarantees of being good indicators of biodiversity, both for predicting the diversity of other groups of animals and for all the species of a given area.

Conservation of European environments: The Spheciformes wasps as biodiversity indicators (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Ampulicidae, Sphecidae and Crabronidae)

Geographic and political factors affect global research in many areas of biology with substantial field components. Progress in new species discovery continues to be undermined by sociopolitical impediments. The number of new species discovered from individual countries in 1 year is highly dependent on taxonomic infrastructure and country-scale biodiversity. Publication patterns suggest that alpha taxonomy is a higher research priority in high-biodiversity countries than in low-biodiversity countries. Alpha-taxonomy articles with authors affiliated with highbiodiversity, low-taxonomic-infrastructure tropical countries have very high rates of international collaboration, underscoring its importance in the discovery of new tropical species. Most new species descriptions include specimens collected less than 5 years prior to publication, which indicates the importance of ongoing collection efforts. National and international policies that strengthen both the taxonomic infrastructure of high-biodiversity countries and collaborations between high-biodiversity and high-taxonomic-infrastructure countries are necessary to accelerate global biodiversity discovery, given the current rapid rate of species extinctions.

Faunistic investigations conducted in North Korea by researchers from the Institute of Zoology Polish Academy of Sciences from 1959 to 1990

Aphid-aphidophage community was studied in four regions of Poland. The sweep -net technique and catch per unit time provide a representative picture of the species composi­ tion if a series of 15-25 samples is used. In addition to Асуrthosiphon pisum ( H a r r i s ) , five groups of consumers are included to the community. Within two food chains, oligophagous predators and parasites, 126 species were recorded. A new concept of the aphid-aphidophage community structure has been developed. Among the dominant species there were 6 Coccinellidae, 7 Syrphidae and 3 Ghrysopidae. On each site the community is enriched in local, accessory species. Among the parasites a high stability of occurrence was observed for the ApMdiidae. Charipidae and Geraphronidae. The species composition of the Aphelinidae is not stable. The number dynamics of aphids has two peaks : in the spring-summer period and in the autumn, The appearance of aphidophages is significantly correlated with the first peak. ,, 3
