Understanding FRBR: What It is and How It will Affect Our Retrieval Tools

Introduction This bibliography is meant to accompany the literature review on cataloging and classification covering 2009 and 2010, " Cresting toward the Sea Change, " that is published in the April 2012 issue of Library Resources and Technical Services (volume 56, number 2). It contains citations to English-sources are listed here than were discussed in the literature review. The citations are arranged in the same manner as the article, with entries listed under nine broad topic headings (see the list, below). Knowledge organization standards are important community artifacts that set forth agreed upon specifications and protocols, and though they may appear neutral they have been shown to harbor specific perspectives. These perspectives are often covert but hold implications for the ways in which knowledge is conceptualized, organized, and represented. Values are deeply held preferences for ways of acting and ways of being, and represent an effective lens for examining the perspectives embedded in societal practices and artifacts. To date, however, knowledge organization standards have not been approached through formal value analysis. This study addresses this gap through an examination of the influential library standard Resource Description and Access (RDA), specifically focusing on what values are present within this standard, how these values are communicated, and how they are recognized and responded to by practitioners. To address these questions, a qualitative, exploratory, multiphase study was conducted, utilizing value and rhetorical analyses of the text of RDA as well as open-ended interviews with RDA practitioners focused on their interpretations of the document. Findings show that RDA upholds its design principles through the expression of principles-based values and values associated with user needs, communicated through a set of routine structures such as directives and conditionals. In their usage of RDA, catalogers place greater emphasis on values associated with users and their perspectives, and see access as the most important value within this standard. At the same time, the relative absence of asserted community values such as privacy and autonomy illustrates the challenged nature of human values in knowledge organization standards. Findings from this study demonstrate the integral nature of values in standards, and position value analysis as a useful methodology in the critical study of standards in all domains. For the knowledge organization and cultural heritage communities, this work reveals the ways in which standards and their enactments serve to mediate key community values. In raising questions about the role of human values in knowledge organization standards, this study also contributes to ongoing discussions of information ethics and professional values. This article has several goals: to outline current practices, theories, and models; to discuss existing metadata schemas; and to identify theoretical models that apply to metadata schema design in this context. The article also explores best practices and identifies gaps in the literature; it offers suggestions for future research on metadata in archives and cultural heritage institutions.

A body of cataloguing practice has coalesced around Cataloguing Cultural Objects: a Guide to Describing CulturalWorks
and Their Images (CCO) since its publication in 2003. CCO is amanual for describing, documenting, and cataloguing
cultural works and their visual surrogates.The primary focus ofCCOis art and architecture, including but not limited
to paintings, sculpture, prints,manuscripts, photographs, built works, installations, and other visual media.CCOalso
covers many other types of cultural works, including archaeological sites, artifacts, and functional objects from the
realm of material culture. This paper examines the influence of CCO and its implementation in cataloguing settings
for the museum and image library community. In drawing together three diverse scenarios, the authors have
identified common strategies for particular challenges in each one. The showcase projects include: (1) the
development of a de facto standard for contributing cultural and natural history collections to union catalogues
and digital repositories by harmonizing the CDWA Lite and museumdat XML schemas; (2) the use of CCO in the
Society of Architectural Historians Architecture Resources Archive (SAHARA) project, a shared online archive
of photographs that document architecture and cultural landscapes worldwide � the SAHARA project
developed a cataloguing template for use by scholars and librarians; and (3) the application of CCO alongside
other guidelines in records for cultural works in library settings. Emerging CCO cataloguing practice has resulted
in a significant body of records from the museum and image library communities headed for LAM (library/
archive/museum) integrated access environments. The authors comment on how cataloguing decision-making
(e.g. differing concepts about a �work�) may impact the convergence of records in these environments.

The Cataloging Cultural Objects experience: Codifying practice for the cultural heritage community

To publish core data for museum objects in general museum portals and repositories is an everyday requirement for museums with all kind of collections. Efforts for developing metadata formats that allow for contributing data in a standardized way are currently bundled in a joint initiative of the creators of the CDWA Lite Schema and the museumdat Schema: The common goal of the CDWA Lite Advisory Committee and the Documentation Committee of the German Museums Association is to agree on a single, CIDOC-CRM compliant schema that meets the requirements articulated by CDWA Lite and museumdat and subsequent reviews. The key point of such a schema, as formalized in museumdat, is to combine the best aspects of both - the event-oriented, multi-disciplinary approach of the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model, and the relative simplicity and core elements offered by CDWA-lite. Current steps of the established working group are presented.
