Removal of As(III) and As(V) using rubber tire derived activated carbon modified with alumina composite

This study examined the effect of potassium permanganate (KMnO4)-modified activated carbon for formaldehyde removal under different face velocities and different initial formaldehyde concentrations in building environment. We chose the coconut shell activated carbon due to their high density and purity. Moreover, they have a clear environmental advantage over coal-based carbons, particularly in terms of acidification potential. The chemical properties were characterized by FTIR to show the functional groups, EDS to calculate each component of their energy bands to know how the ratio is. Also, the morphology of the surface was examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The BET determines specific surface area, pore size, and pore volume. It was found that where the initial formaldehyde concentration and the face velocity are low, adsorption capacity is high. The adsorption isotherms of formaldehyde on modified activated carbon are well fitted by both Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The rate parameter for the pseudo-first-order model, pseudo-second-order model, and intraparticle diffusion model was compared. The correlation coefficient of pseudo-second-order kinetic model (0.999 > R2 > 0.9548) is higher than the coefficient of pseudo-first-order kinetic model (0.5785 < R2 < 0.8755) and intraparticle diffusion model (0.9752 < R2 < 0.9898). Thus, pseudo-second-order kinetic model is more apposite to discuss the adsorption kinetic in this test, and the overall rate of the modified activated carbon adsorption process appears to be influenced by more than one step that is both the intraparticle diffusion model and membrane diffusion.

Characterization and adsorption capacity of potassium permanganate used to modify activated carbon filter media for indoor formaldehyde removal

In this study, coal-based granular activated carbon loaded with MnO2 (ACLM) was tested as adsorbent for the removal of formaldehyde from aqueous solution. The ACLM was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. The optimized pH of formaldehyde adsorption was 7.0. The removal percentage increased from 21.8 to 72.1% by raising the ACLM dosage from 0.1 to 1.0 g. The formaldehyde adsorption rate increased a little at initial formaldehyde concentrations from 0.6 to 1.8 mg/L. The adsorption equilibrium time was 24 h. The adsorption rate of formaldehyde increased from 58.1 to 61.2% with temperature rising from 298 to 308 K and decreased from 61.2 to 54.0% when temperature from 308 to 318 K. Isotherm modeling revealed that Langmuir equation could better describe the adsorption of formaldehyde onto the ACLM and the maximum adsorption capacity obtained was 4.53 mg/g. Coal-based granular activated carbon loaded with MnO2 as an efficient adsorbent for removing formaldehyde from aqueous solution

Despite the rapid increase in the utilization of reinforced nanomaterials composites, micromaterials may also have the potential to be utilized as filler in polymer composites. In this study, the activated carbon (AC) filled epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) composite was fabricated using the solvent casting method. AC was used as the filler at different filler addition in range from 0 to 7 parts per hundred rubbers (phr). The intention was to investigate the effect of AC filled ENR on mechanical properties and interaction between AC and ENR matrix. Overall, the result shows high improvement in mechanical properties. At 7 phr, the tensile strength was 7.0 MPa compared to 2.6 MPa for 0 phr, which indicates the increase by almost 2 times. The elongation also increases for all phr, which indicates the good filler effect.

Fabrication of Activated Carbon Filled Epoxidized Natural Rubber Composite Using Solvent Casting Method

A new type of benzene adsorption material was prepared by using the airtight heat treatment method. This method can directly transform the organic impurities of the activated alumina waste into carbon with adsorption capability. The microstructure and carbon content of materials were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET (Brunauer Emmett Teller) surface area analysis and elemental analysis. The influences of heat treatment temperature on the properties of the composite materials were discussed. The benzene adsorption capability of the material was investigated. The experimental results show that the optimal heat treatment process condition is airtight heating at 400°C for 2 h. The resulting sample has carbon mass fraction of 3.57%, specific surface area of 234.70m2/g, pore volume of 0.41m3/g, and average pore size of 6.59 nm. The samples show excellent benzene adsorption capability with an adsorption rate of 21.80%.

Preparation of benzene adsorption materials using waste activated alumina

AlCl3,NH3·H2O,HNO3 and activated carbon were used as raw materials to prepare one new type of activated alumina-activated carbon composite material.The influence of heat treatment conditions on the structure and property of this material was discussed;The microstructures of the composite material were characterized by XRD,SEM,BET techniques;and its formaldehyde adsorption characteristic was also tested.The results showed that the optimal heat treatment temperature of the activated alumina-activated carbon composite material was 450 ℃,iodine adsorption value was 441.40 mg/g,compressive strength was 44 N,specific surface area was 360.07 m2/g,average pore size was 2.91 nm,and pore volume was 0.26 m3/g.According to the BET pore size distribution diagram,the composite material has dual-pore size distribution structure,the micro-pore distributes in the range of 0.6-1.7 nm,and the meso-pore in the range of 3.0-8.0 nm.The formaldehyde adsorption effect of the activated alumina-activated carbon composite material was excellent,much better than that of the pure activated carbon or activated alumina,and its saturated adsorption capacity was 284.19 mg/g.
