BIM is increasingly getting into the awareness in construction industry. BIM is the process of creating and data managing of the building during its life cycle. BIM became a part of management tools in modern construction companies. Construction projects have a number of participants. It means difficulty process of construction project management and a serious requirement for processing the huge amount of information including design, construction, time and cost parameters, economic efficiency and sustainability. Progressive information and communication technologies support cost management and management of construction project. One of them is Building Information Modelling. Aim of the paper is to examine the impact of BIM exploitation and benefits on construction project management in Slovak companies.

Exploitation and Benefits of BIM in Construction Project Management

Achieving a satisfactory level for indoor environments of historical buildings is an ongoing problem that needs to be solved due to a large demand for deep retrofits in the whole of Europe. The implementation of the indoor environmental quality index (IEQ) to predict an occupant’s satisfaction in thermo-modernized historical buildings is a new concept which is a response to existing needs. In this article, a relevant study is provided with the intention to evaluate the indoor environmental performance of retrofitting effects in historical buildings dating back to the years 1873–1878. Considering the historical character of the buildings, some of the cellar spaces were fitted out with an innovative internal insulation system of mineral sheets based on calcium silicate to prevent water vapor condensation and effectively limit mold growth. The IEQ methodology was applied for retrofitted and non-retrofitted spaces as a comparison. Four essential components of indoor quality are investigated: thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustic comfort, and visual quality. The results of sub-component indexes are calculated based on the measured indoor parameters and the specific sensory functions. This paper discusses the results of an indoor environmental analysis including a mycological air quality assessment with the newly developed IAQindex (fungal air contamination index), total volatile organic compound concentration (TVOC), CO2, and formaldehyde (HCHO) assessment, the evaluation energy-related thermal comfort, acoustic, and visual quality, of modernized spaces. A questionnaire survey study was additionally carried out among a building’s users intentioned to compare the accounts of satisfaction before and after the retrofitting process and also to compare “subjective” results with the one’s based on in situ tests. The retrofitting approach was proven to be effective in limiting the presence of molds and a significant difference in indoor environmental quality between thermally insulated and uninsulated spaces was observed and discussed.

Implementation of the Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Model for the Assessment of a Retrofitted Historical Masonry Building

Business results and enterprise performance depends on various factors. First of all, there are primarily human resources and their knowledge, skills and competencies. Managerial decisions supported by progressive technology are other important factor. These decisions are often done based on reports and analyses with help of enterprise information systems. The proper complementation of new technology and management system can be achieved a significant impact on key performance indicators and results of enterprises and projects. Implementation of new technology such as enterprise information system should be an asset for the enterprise. Cost and profit are one of the elementary key performance indicators. Measurement of its impact on business results are very important for construction project management. There is assumption, that exploitation of enterprise information system has effects on cost and profit in construction project management. Research discusses issue of enterprise information system impact on key performance indicators in construction project management. Research sample included results of construction projects in Slovak construction industry. Main objective of research was set as confirmation of hypotheses, that enterprise information system has impact on selected key performance indicators like cost and profit.

The paper discusses problems in the carrying out of construction projects in large urban agglomerations on the example of two structures located in Krakow. The location and the specifics of the work that had to be performed generated numerous technological and organisational problems. The manner of solving them, in addition to propositions of guidelines for similar projects are discussed in the paper.

Problems in Carrying Out Construction Projects in Large Urban Agglomerations on the Example of the Construction of the Axis and High5ive Office Buildings in Krakow

Adapting historic buildings to new, modern forms generates not only financial benefits for developers but can also allow them to survive for future generations through proper remodelling. The variety of decision criteria related to the selection of a new function of a historic building makes this problem multidimensional. Many of these criteria are interrelated and have a non-linear nature which requires a comprehensive network-based rather than a classic hierarchical approach to conducting multi-criteria analysis. A comprehensive approach taking into account the specificity of the analysed problem was proposed. The study was supported by an example of the choice of building function as part of the adaptive reuse of a historic building located in Zakopane. The following variants have been analysed: a hostel (existing state), a five-star hotel, a folk art gallery and a conference and training centre. The final rating of alternatives indicates that the hotel best meets the adopted decision criteria.

Fuzzy Model for Selecting a Form of Use Alternative for a Historic Building to be Subjected to Adaptive Reuse

The paper presents an analysis of the profitability of investment in a selection of systems based on renewable energy sources on the example of a semi-detached house with a floor area of nearly 150 m2 . The analysis was conducted in three variants:1) the application of a biomass boiler, solar collectors and photovoltaic panels; 2) a heat pump, solar collectors and photovoltaic panels; 3) a heat pump, solar collectors and a wind turbine. Next, the proposed solutions were compared with a traditional heating system featuring a gas-powered boiler and obtaining electricity through the power distribution grid. The investment and operational costs were calculated after the selection of the appropriate equipment. The example under analysis indicates that variant 3 entailed the highest investment costs (the purchase and fitting of a heat pump as well as the drilling required to install underground pumps). Traditional technical solutions were proven to produce the highest costs. The investment profitability analysis was conducted using both the simple and discounted methods of evaluating profitability. It was established that variant 3 yielded the shortest discounted payback period - less than 13 years. It is estimated that the investment will reach the break-even point after this time. As a summary, it must be noted that the profitability of a given investment depends on the adopted technical solutions. Due to high initials costs, investors often lack interest in the purchase and installation of renewable energy generation systems; however, the contribution of the investors can be lowered with the use of subsidies and price reductions regarding the installation of renewable energy generation systems. We can observe a decrease in the price of the most popular and efficient renewable energy systems.
