Brazil was the American society that received the largest contingent of African slaves in the Americas and the longest lasting slave regime in the Western Hemisphere. This is the first complete modern survey of the institution of slavery in Brazil and how it affected the lives of enslaved Africans. It is based on major new research on the institution of slavery and the role of Africans and their descendants in Brazil. Although Brazilians have incorporated many of the North American debates about slavery, they have also developed a new set of questions about slave holding: the nature of marriage, family, religion, and culture among the slaves and free colored; the process of manumission; and the rise of the free colored class during slavery. It is the aim of this book to introduce the reader to this latest research, both to elucidate the Brazilian experience and to provide a basis for comparisons with all other American slave systems.

Slavery in Brazil

This thesis argue the national market integration, that happened in the first government of Vargas (1930-1945), with great factor to the construction of economic structure of industrial base, that allowed the Brazilian economic into a time of great development and economic growth. In this process, the focus is on the work of the population displacement. The national market integration claimed the construction of a new standard of population displacement in the country. Despite of the characteristics of the populations displacement was already in modification, the State mediate on this process, because of the creation of specific polices, trying to go deep and accelerate the market integration, including the work market. The relative politics to the population displacement, practiced and created during the first government of Vargas, shows the intention of this government to support and impulse the development of a new standard of urban industrial accumulation. Even If they didn’t achieve their objectives that were proposed, the politics related to the population displacement that started in the first government of Vargas, allowed the constitution of the bases that was going to be used, in spite of the characteristics relatively different, the significative economic development realized after the war. Instituições e diferenças de renda entre os estados brasileiros: uma análise histórica

This paper analyses the importance of mortgage credit for the growth of the coffee economy in the Paraiba valley region, using as documentary sources three mortgage books from the localities of Guaratingueta and Lorena. The paper shows how the traditional credit practices gave way to banking ones after the mortgage law of 1864/65. Nevertheless, only a small percentage of the population benefited from the new form of financing, with the wealthier ones enjoying the best credit facilities.

O financiamento hipotecário da cafeicultura no vale do Paraíba paulista (1865-87)

The Brazilian market in the XIX century: an approach through the cabotage commerce. The maritime commerce consisted of the main way of circulation of the goods between the Brazilian provinces until the second half of century XIX. Although the relatively big importance of the flows of commerce with the exterior, we note significant exchange of goods by sea between the Brazilian regions since the colonial period. A part of these exchanges derived from products destined in last instance to the foreigner or imported of the exterior. However, another part elapsed of national goods that had not arrived at be exported to the international market. Many goods for the colonial and imperial consumption had circulated by the Brazilian coasts in expressive sums. From the information raised for the imperial period, especially the decades of 1860 and 1870, we verify that most of the goods commercialized between the provinces consisted of national products destined to the internal consumption.

O mercado brasileiro do século XIX: uma visão por meio do comércio de cabotagem

The republican transition introduced great changes to the Brazilian and especially Sao Paulo economy, through abolition of slavery, immigration promotion programs, coffee boom and monetary reforms. At this moment, the city of Sao Paulo became a great center of these changes. The banking institutions consisted of important agents in the financial market. We analyze the performance of the banks in the supply of the mortgages loan in the city of Sao Paulo of 1888 the 1901. Our research crosses bank balance sheets with mortgage registries to investigate the profile and behavior of institutional long term credit during a critical era in Sao Paulo's history. We argue that the mortgage market at this had dramatic expansion and diversified of what they had pointed the previous studies regarding the banking and economic development. Mortgage banks were the single most important source of mortgage lending in the paulistano market, but sharply curtailed their new loan writing toward the end of the 1890s. Commercial banks lent money in mortgages for longer time periods than was typical for this type of institutions. Even foreign commercial banks, which were warned away from transactions with long time horizons, entered this market.
