Economics of natural resources and the environment

Historically, management theory has ignored the constraints imposed by the biophysical (natural) environment. Building upon resource-based theory, this article attempts to fill this void by proposing a natural-resource-based view of the firm—a theory of competitive advantage based upon the firm's relationship to the natural environment. It is composed of three interconnected strategies: pollution prevention, product stewardship, and sustainable development. Propositions are advanced for each of these strategies regarding key resource requirements and their contributions to sustained competitive advantage.

A natural resource-based view of the firm

Green building is one of measures been put forward to mitigate significant impacts of the building stock on the environment, society and economy. However, there is lack of a systematic review of this large number of studies that is critical for the future endeavor. The last decades have witnessed rapid growing number of studies on green building. This paper reports a critical review of the existing body of knowledge of researches related to green building. The common research themes and methodology were identified. These common themes are the definition and scope of green building; quantification of benefits of green buildings compared to conventional buildings; and various approaches to achieve green buildings. It is found that the existing studies played predominately focus on the environmental aspect of green building. Other dimensions of sustainability of green building, especially the social sustainability is largely overlooked. Future research opportunities were identified such as effects of climatic conditions on the effectiveness of green building assessment tools, validation of real performance of green buildings, unique demands of specific population, and future proofing.

Green building research–current status and future agenda: A review

Strong spatial variation of rupture characteristics in the moment magnitude (Mw) 9.0 Tohoku-Oki megathrust earthquake controlled both the strength of shaking and the size of the tsunami that followed. Finite-source imaging reveals that the rupture consisted of a small initial phase, deep rupture for up to 40 seconds, extensive shallow rupture at 60 to 70 seconds, and continuing deep rupture lasting more than 100 seconds. A combination of a shallow dipping fault and a compliant hanging wall may have enabled large shallow slip near the trench. Normal faulting aftershocks in the area of high slip suggest dynamic overshoot on the fault. Despite prodigious total slip, shallower parts of the rupture weakly radiated at high frequencies, whereas deeper parts of the rupture radiated strongly at high frequencies.

RESUMO Os edifícios são grandes responsáveis pelo consumo energético e pelas emissões de CO2, causadores do efeito estufa, e representam um desafio global para o futuro de baixo carbono. As fachadas recebem destaque por serem o maior elemento construtivo e exercerem grande influencia no consumo de energia das edificações. Investir em eficiência energética e reduzir os impactos ambientais negativos são propostas que estão em diversos acordos mundiais, tais como a Diretiva Europeia 2010/31 EU (com seus objetivos “20-20-20”), que estabelece limites para as emissões de CO2, redução do consumo de energia nas edificações e investimento na produção de energias renováveis. Os edifícios, portanto, representam um elemento chave para as estratégias de mitigação. Dentro dessa perspectiva, este estudo tem como objetivo analisar, sob os âmbitos energético e ambiental, o desempenho de soluções de fachada para edifícios de escritórios no Brasil.

Relevance of embodied energy on building retrofit assessment

Despite the recognised importance of built heritage for sustainable development, and the multiple tools, recommendations, guidelines, and policies developed in recent years to support decision-making, good sustainable conservation practices often fail to be implemented. Challenges faced by practitioners often relate to external factors, and there is a gap in the understanding of the role of the nature of the designer and the behavioural dimension of the challenges in implementation. This research applies the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to verify how a building passport for sustainable conservation (BPSC) impacts design students’ intentions and actual design decisions towards built heritage conservation. This research aims to ascertain the role of the BPSC to affect attitudes, subjective norms, and intentions and ultimately change conservation behaviours. The results show that this tool has a positive contribution to reinforce existing attitudinal beliefs. Still, no significant changes were found in the overall conservation behaviours, suggesting that beliefs hindering implementation may more often be related to aesthetic reasons, creativity and innovation, and program requirements, than with beliefs regarding the sustainable performance of the building. This study demonstrates that using the TPB to analyse design processes in the context of built heritage is an innovative methodological approach that contributes to a deeper understanding of the psychological factors affecting sustainability and built heritage conservation decisions.

Beyond good intentions: the role of the building passport for the sustainable conservation of built heritage to behavioural change

Facing the increasing pursuit of sustainable buildings, the construction industry has been adopting new project technologies. Building Sustainability Assessment (BSA) methods are a key tool to evaluate building sustainability, but their use is hindered by the time-consuming assessment process and required data. With the emergence of Building Information Modelling (BIM), new potentialities have been found, such as continuous data storage and integrated building design. Facing the opportunity to integrate BSA into BIM, this research aims to automate the assessment of a BSA scheme by creating a BIM-based application for the project's early stages. Visual Programming Language (VPL) was used to translate SBToolPT-H criteria requirements into computable rules and create the SBToolBIM application. Results show the feasibility of automating BSA with BIM, by integrating 19 criteria into SBToolBIM and identifying BIM connections for the remaining 6 criteria. The applied procedure has established a novel framework to carry out BSA within the BIM environment in a faster and more reliable way using fewer resources. It offers a decision support tool for the design process able to provide valuable contributions to enhance building sustainability and meet decarbonisation and climate goals. 

Automating building sustainability assessment using building information modelling: A case study

A construção vernácula carateriza-se pela relação próxima com as condições locais do meio em que se insere (clima, materiais, economia, cultura, etc.). Os territórios continental e insular de Portugal são marcados pela heterogeneidade entre si pelo que deu origem ao desenvolvimento de diferentes tipos de arquitetura vernácula. As construções vernáculas enfrentam as adversidades dos diferentes locais adaptando-se através de estratégias simples, funcionais e passivas, o que faz com que este tipo de arquitetura seja uma inspiração para a construção contemporânea na procura de soluções sustentáveis. Neste artigo é apresentado um tipo de construção tradicional em madeira, os Palheiros da Praia de Mira. Este tipo de construção utiliza um recurso local, a madeira de pinho, e tenta tirar proveito das caraterísticas deste num clima húmido e na implantação sobre a areia das dunas. Com o objetivo de perceber o desempenho térmico deste tipo de arquitetura vernácula, foi monitorizado o desempenho térmico e avaliadas as condições de conforto térmico num caso de estudo ao longo das várias estações do ano. Dos resultados obtidos, durante grande parte do tempo de monitorização as condições de conforto térmico mantiveram-se próximas ou em limites aceitáveis, com excepção do período de inverno.
