A lamp turns on a bright light when a sleeper's pulse races during a night terror. The night terror lamp communicates wirelessly with a heart-rate monitor worn by the sleeper. The bright light helps to wake the sleeper and helps to alert others that the sleeper is having a night terror so they can help the sleeper. Other devices and methods are disclosed.

There is provided a method and apparatus for monitoring a subject. A sequence of sensor signals associated with an environment of the subject is acquired from at least one sensor signal. The acquired sequence of sensor signals is compared to at least one stored sequence of sensor signals. The stored sequence of sensor signals comprise one or more features associated with an activity. A stored sequence of sensor signals comprising one or more features that match features of the acquired sequence of sensor signals is identified. It is detected whether the subject performs the activity associated with the one or more features of the identified sequence of sensor signals. A failure of the subject to perform the activity is indicative of a memory loss event. A notification is output where the subject fails to perform the activity.

The invention provides a method, equipment and a sleep server for terminating poor-quality sleep and an intelligent wearable terminal. The method includes periodically receiving basic sleep monitoring data monitored and transmitted by the intelligent wearable terminal according to first frequencies and analyzing the received basic sleep monitoring data in real time to determine whether a user is in a deep sleep stage or not; transmitting first control instructions to the intelligent wearable terminal when the fact that the user is already in the deep sleep stage is determined, adjusting monitoring frequencies and monitoring indexes to enable the intelligent wearable terminal to monitor and transmit deep sleep monitoring data according to second frequencies, periodically receiving the deep sleep monitoring data transmitted by the intelligent wearable terminal and analyzing the received deep sleep monitoring data in real time to determine whether the user is in a poor-sleep state or not; transmitting second control instructions to the intelligent wearable terminal when the fact that the user is in the poor-quality sleep state is determined, enabling the intelligent wearable terminal to transmit human-perceptible signals to wake up the user so as to terminate the poor-quality sleep. A pressure distribution profile of a subject lying on a mat is used to derive a measure of pulse wave velocity. Beat locations are identified where beat pressure signals are identified, and pulse timing information is obtained from the beat locations. By determining a subject posture, the beat locations are mapped to anatomical body locations and arterial path length information is obtained for the anatomical body locations. A pulse wave velocity is then estimated from the pulse timing information and arterial path lengths. This method enables measuring the pulse wave velocity during sleep in a comfortable, easy and unconstrained manner. This is accomplished by analyzing signals from a pressure sensitive surface for example on top of a bed mattress or by embedding a pressure sensitive layer in the mattress.

Methods and apparatus for monitoring, diagnosing, and treating sleep disorders such as sleep terrors are provided, which may include any number of features. One feature is an apparatus configured to partially awaken a user to treat a sleep disorder. The apparatus can include one or more sensors configured to monitor a sleep parameter of the user, one or more therapeutic devices configured to apply a therapy to the user to partially awaken the user, and an electronic controller operatively coupled to the sensors and therapeutic devices to determine when to apply the therapy, and how to apply the therapy so as to only partially awaken the user.
