A combination form of flexible roofing material including a reinforced single-ply membrane base for being adhered to the roof substrate. On the base is laminated a structurally flexible layer of solar cells encapsulated and sealed in a flexible intermediate layer of solar radiation transparent plastic protected by a cover layer of weather-proof solar transparent plastic. The roofing is constructed for being manufactured in elongate sheets, rolled up for transport to the site and installed by conventional methods including sealing to adjacent sheets of similar single-ply membrane material which may or may not incorporate solar cells. This is continued until the roof covering is complete. Examples are given for reinforced plastic sheet, modified bituminous sheet, and elastomeric sheet roofing materials as well as for a wide variety of solar cells materials together with methods for fabricating these materials into the roofing system disclosed.

A combination roofing panel and solar module includes a flexible membrane sheet, such as a single-ply membrane sheet, and a plurality of elongated solar or photovoltaic modules arranged side-by-side, end-to-end, or adjacent each other. The modules are adhered to the flexible membrane, and the edges of the modules having electrical connectors or electrodes are arranged to face each other or be aligned with each other. The electrical connectors are connected by a solder connection to module electrodes through apertures in a bottom surface of the flexible membrane and are connected in series. The series electrical connectors are connected directly to direct current (DC) electric devices, to a combiner box, to another panel or to an inverter which provides coverts direct current (DC) to alternating current electricity for use in residential, commercial or industrial building structures. The present invention relates to a photovoltaic system and methods of making same. The photovoltaic system has a plurality of layers attached to each other to form a unitary structure. More specifically, the photovoltaic system includes: a base, flexible membrane layer; a photovoltaic layer having at least one photovoltaic cell associated therewith; a semi-rigid laye for supporting the photovoltaic layer and imparting rigidity thereto; and a top, transparent, protective layer for protecting the base, flexible membrane layer, the semi-rigid layer and the photovoltaic layer from exposure to the environment. The photovoltaic layer and the semi-rigid layer are disposed between the base, flexible membrane layer and the top, protective layer. Additional layers of adhesive may be disposed between the various layers to facilitate bonding thereof.

Photovoltaic system and method of making same

The present invention teaches a solar cell, a solar module, a solar array, a network of solar arrays, and also a solar power grid suitable for providing power for industrial, residential and transportation use. A solar cell or solar module including a plurality of solar cells can be made in a structure configured to have the appearance of natural foliage. Accordingly, a solar array including a plurality of solar modules each including at least one solar cell can be made to resemble a palm tree, a deciduous tree, an evergreen tree, or other type of natural foliage. A network of solar arrays can be made to resemble a row or grove of palm trees, and thus meet the functional and aesthetic demands of landscape architecture. The network of solar arrays can extend for many miles alongside roads, highways, railways, pipelines, or canals, and can further include means for storing and transmitting electric power. In particular, a network of solar arrays can be in communication with recharging stations for use by electric and hybrid transportation vehicles. Accordingly, a network of solar arrays can form at least a portion of a solar power grid.

A retractable power supply including a solar cell for converting incident radiation to electrical energy and a base member for (1) storing the solar cell when said cell is not operatively deployed and (2) supporting the solar cell when said cell is in an operative condition. A rechargeable battery pack may be included in the base member for storing electrical energy generated by the solar cell. In one particularly noteworthy embodiment, the solar cell may be employed as a retractable window shade.
