Claims that religion can influence ethical behavior in business are plausible to many people but problematic in light of existing research. Our analysis indicates that religious role expectations, internalized as a religious self-identity, can influence ethical behavior. However, relationships of religious role expectations to behavior are moderated by religious identity salience and religious motivational orientation. We conclude by discussing the influence of organizational context on religious identity salience and the need for innovative and interdisciplinary empirical research on religion and ethical behavior in organizations.

Noncompliance in hemodialysis: Predictors and survival analysis

Five studies examined the relations between attitude importance and 3 of its hypothesized determinants: self-interest, social identification with reference groups or reference individuals, and cherished values. Verbal protocols, multivariate analysis of survey data, and laboratory experimentation revealed that (1) people's theories of the causes of attitude importance pointed to all 3 hypothesized predictors, (2) the 3 predictors each had significant, unique statistical associations with importance, and (3) a manipulation of self-interest yielded a corresponding change in importance. These results help clarify the nature and origins of attitude importance, challenge the widely believed claim that self-interest has little or no impact on political cognition, and identify new likely consequences of social identification processes and values.

Origins of attitude importance: self-interest, social identification, and value relevance.

The involvement construct has been extensively studied in the consumer behavior literature. Recent conceptual and measurement breakthroughs have made examination of the construct appealing in the contexts of recreational and tourist behavior. This article suggests 15 propositions that evolve from a review of involvement‐related literature. The propositions are grouped under the following headings: measurement issues; the relationship between involvement and time; the relationship of involvement with search and purchase behavior; the relationship between involvement and promotional stimuli; and accessing the involvement variable. The propositions are intended to stimulate and guide empirical research related to involvement in recreation and tourism contexts.

The Psychology of Death

Numerous studies report that self-interest has a nonsignificant influence upon various political and social attitudes. In contrast, a recent article by Green and Gerken (1989) reports a California study showing that cigarette smokers are significantly more opposed than nonsmokers to public smoking restrictions and tobacco sales tax increases. The present article replicates and extends this analysis with data from two different statesIllinois (in 1984, N = 458) and North Carolina (in 1985, N = 488)-and using analysis techniques that differ from and expand upon the California study. Despite these methodological differences, self-interest is again shown to have a significant influence on opinions concerning public smoking restrictions and taxation, as well as on several additional issues relating to smoking and tobacco.

Ethnographic fieldwork and a social survey were employed to generate descriptive information and internal comparisons among 67 fishermen's wives from Harkers Island, North Carolina, and to make comparisons between these females and 167 nonfishermen's wives and 37 married fishermen (their husbands) from the island. Results indicated that the fishermen's wives were substantially unenthusiastic about their husbands' occupational choice and suggested that these females may exercise a dissuasive influence upon the intergenerational perpetuation of fishing as a way of life. Very few significant differences were found in 107 comparative tests with the two other subject categories, suggesting substantial cultural homogeneity among residents from the research site and the persistence of a strong maritime tradition.
