Nous avons marque individuellement des juveniles de saumon coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) sauvage, en octobre 1990 et 1991, pour evaluer les effets de la complexite de l'habitat et de la taille des poissons sur la survie hivernale dans le Big Beef Creek (Washington). Nous avons quantifie la complexite de l'habitat dans l'unite d'habitat ou les poissons ont ete preleves et, en 1991, nous l'avons fait egalement dans le troncon de 500 m situe en aval du lieu de prelevement. La survie, estimee d'apres la recuperation de smolts marques a l'embouchure du cours d'eau, differait d'une annee a l'autre (25,4 et 46,2%) et variait aussi selon les unites d'habitat et les troncons une meme annee. Le taux de survie etait au moins faiblement correle a la complexite des unites d'habitat, et etait fortement correle a la quantite de debris de bois et a la densite des unites d'habitat dans le troncon de 500 m, et avec la distance par rapport a l'estuaire. Etant donne que la distance variait avec la complexite de l'habitat, nous n'avons pas pu etablir quel facteur avait l'influence la plus forte sur la survie. De plus, les poissons de grande taille survivaient generalement en plus grande proportion que les individus de petite taille. Toutefois, les poissons marques au-dessus du lac William Symington etaient plus petits a l'automne mais plus grands au stade du smolt, et presentaient des taux de survie plus eleves, que ceux marques au-dessous du lac. Consideres ensemble, ces resultats revelent des relations complexes entre la taille, l'habitat et la croissance, relations qui peuvent affecter la survie hivernale. et les evenements subsequents du cycle biologique.

The pursuit of simplicity in the complex management of instream and out-of-stream water uses very early led to the minimum, or “base,” flow concept and the myth that a consistent methodology could be used to establish the desired minimum flow. Such a single flow value has not proven to be practical. As water becomes fully appropriated to upstream use and storage, the minimum flow, if not violated, tends to become the average condition. This situation is manifest in a flat or stepped but fixed hydrograph throughout the stream reach of concern for much of the year.

The Use of Habitat Structure Preferenda for Establishing Flow Regimes Necessary for Maintenance of Fish Habitat

PREFACE The Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) models presented in this publication aid in identifying important habitat variables. Facts, ideas, and concepts obtained from the research literature and expert reviews are synthesized and presented in a format that can be used for impact assessment. The models are hypotheses of species-habitat relationships, and model users should recognize that the degree of veracity of the HSI model, SI graphs, and assumptions will vary according to geographical area and the extent of the data base for individual variables. After clear study objectives have been set, the HSI model building techniques presented in U.S: Fish and Wildlife Service (1981)1 and the general guidelines for modifying HSI models and estimating model variables presented in Ter-rel l et al. (1982)2 may be useful for simplifying and applying the models to specific impact assessment problems. Simplified models should be tested with independent data sets if possible. A brief discussion of the appropriateness of using selected Suitability Index (SI) curves from HSI models as a component of the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM) is provided. Additional SI curves, developed specifically for analysis of rainbow trout habitat with IFIM, also are presented. The U. S. Fi sh and Wi 1dl i fe Servi ce encourages mode 1 users to comments, suggestions, and test results that may help us increase the and effectiveness of this habitat-based approach to impact assessment.
