Abstract: a t t s t n d M t t n s d a i r r T w edicare regulations and ACR uidelines require formal written reorts for the interpretation of imagng studies [1,2]. These official reorts facilitate communication and illing and serve important docuentation functions. Although not equired, radiology reports are, with are exception, the product of a dication and transcription process. hether this involves old-fashioned assette tapes and human transcripionists or high-speed computers ith the latest voice recognition (VR) oftware, the process is not without ost. Although these transcription exenses were long ago definitely and uthoritatively established as the reponsibility of technical facilities (eg, ospitals), not interpreting radioloists, a recent controversial opinion rom the government on this matter uggests that a review of key historical ssues is warranted.
