A control system is disclosed for determining an actual temperature of a light emitting diode. The control system uses conductor that supply power to the light emitting diode to supply a pulse to the light emitting diode. The pulse is determined along with a reaction caused by the pulse and the information gained is used in determination of the light emitting diode die temperature which can then be used in controlling current to the light emitting diode to control the temperature of the light emitting diode.

Method and device for remote sensing and control of led lights

The present invention provides a light emitting diode (LED) driving device as a semiconductor device, which comprises: a direct current/direct current (DC/DC) controller, for controlling an output segment that is used to generate an output voltage from an input voltage and supply the output voltage to an LED; an output current driver, for generating an output current of the LED; and an LED short-circuit detection circuit, for monitoring a cathode voltage of the LED to perform an LED short-circuit detection, wherein the LED short-circuit detection circuit controls whether an action is performed or not according to a short-circuit detection enable signal input from outside the LED driving device.

Techniques are provided for bi-directional communication between a power supply and one or more light engines (and/or other lighting system components) via the existing power lines so that no additional communication wires are needed. In particular, the power supply can transmit information by modulating its output (voltage or current) and the light engine (or other lighting componentry, such as a sensor) can communicate back by modulating how much power it draws from the power supply. Any suitable type of modulation scheme can be used, and a master-slave arrangement can be used to control the bi-directional communication if so desired, so as to avoid multiple devices communicating over the power line communication channel at the same time. Other embodiments allow a multiple simultaneous communications over the power line communication channel.

Power line communication for lighting systems

A thermal management system for reducing or eliminating heat-mediated degradation of LED performance and/or operating life. The system may include a thermal controller arranged to respond to an LED operating condition, and to responsively limit temperature in the LED. The thermal controller in one implementation includes a bypass circuit containing a bypass control element, such as a varistor, Zener diode, or antifuse device, and arranged to divert current from flowing to the LED so that the LED remains in a cool state, e.g., below 75°C. The system may be arranged to (I) at least partially attenuate the power supplied to an LED so as to reduce heat generation in such LED and maintain the LED below a threshold temperature and/or (II) remove heat from the LED to maintain temperature of the LED below a threshold temperature.

A method of estimating the junction temperature of a light emitting diode comprises driving a forward bias current through the diode, the current comprising a square wave which toggles between high and low current values (Ihigh, lIow), the high current value (lhιgh) comprising an LED operation current, and the low current value (IIOW) comprising a non-zero measurement current. The forward bias voltage drop (Vf) is sampled and the forward bias voltage drop (VfIow) is determined at the measurement current (IIOW)- The temperature is derived from the determined forward bias voltage drop.

System and method for estimating the junction temperature of a light emitting diode

Described herein is technology for, among other things, a circuit for controlling a current through an LED. The novel circuit includes a regulator for providing the current to the LED, an LED voltage monitoring circuit for monitoring a voltage drop across the LED and for providing a voltage reading signal based on the voltage drop. The novel circuit further includes a data converter logic circuit coupled with the regulator and the LED voltage monitoring circuit. The data converter logic circuit is operable to control the regulator to adjust the current based on the signal.

An encryption-decryption circuit for encrypting and decrypting data. The encryption-decryption circuit comprises: 1) an N-bit shift register for storing and shifting an N bit keyword; 2) a first exclusive-OR gate array for receiving M bits from the N-bit shift register and generating a one-bit exclusive-OR result that is shifted into an input of the N-bit shift register; and 3) a second exclusive-OR gate array comprising K exclusive-OR gates, each of the K exclusive-OR gates receiving one of K bits from the N-bit shift register and one of K data bits from a received K-bit data word and generating therefrom an exclusive-OR result. The K exclusive-OR gates thereby produce one of: i) a K-bit encrypted data word and ii) a K-bit unencrypted data word.
