TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the rapid dissipation of energy during seismic faulting may lead to significant grain-size reduction by thermal cracking adjacent to fault planes, in addition to the recognised processes of frictional wear.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the energy radiated per unit area of an earthquake fault in unit time and the power dissipated on a fault during slip, and found that moderate-to-large earthquakes range over two orders of magnitude, implying considerable variations in seismic efficiency, even for events of similar magnitude occurring on the same type.
