A system and method for producing three-dimensional representations of an object. A first series of projected images of the selected object is recorded in a first projection plane and a second series of projected images of the selected object is recorded in a second projection plane. The first and the second series of projected images are rendered at a common magnification. The first set of projected images is then integrated into a first three-dimensional volume and the second set of projected images is integrated into a second three-dimensional volume. The three-dimensional representation of the object is then produced by combining one projected image from the first set of projected images with one projected image from the second set of projected images. Alternatively, the three-dimensional representation is produced by merging the first three-dimensional volume with the second three-dimensional volume.

A device driver system comprises a core that manages the specific functions of a plurality of I/O devices. The core includes an operating system interface that is generic to different operating systems. An operating system has a device driver interface that is unique to the operating system. A conversion program is layered between the core and the operating system for converting communications between the device driver interface of the operating system and the generic operating system interface of the core. The core includes a channel manager including a request dispatcher, request queues, a command initiator, and a plurality of state machines corresponding to state machine in the I/O devices. A transport layer interfaces between the hardware and the channel manager.

The invention provides a method and apparatus for embedding a real-time multi-tasking kernel in a non-real-time operating system. Through encapsulating a real-time kernel into the interrupt handling environment of a non-real-time graphical user interface, such as Windows®, the method of the present invention allows for an entire real-time environment to be supported within the graphical user interface. The scheduler of the real-time kernel supports multiple threads of execution all running at higher priority than the graphical user interface tasks. By using synchronization mechanisms of the graphical user interface, e.g. V×D events in enhanced mode Windows®, the real-time tasks are able to make use of system services of the graphical user interface.

Embedding a real-time multi-tasking kernel in a non-real-time operating system

An improved device driver for a real time computer system operated by a nonmultitasking operation system and controlling the operation of polled peripheral devices which do not have an interrupt generation capability. The improved device driver of the present invention operates on the general principle of releasing control back to the operating system before completion of a task when a peripheral device is not in a state of readiness to perform its task. The technical approach is a single entry software routine utilizing a state variable to keep track of the internal state of execution of the device driver, which relinquishes control back to the operating system while waiting for the device to become ready to respond, thus allowing the CPU to execute other tasks. Before releasing control to the operating system, the state controlled device driver sets up a system timer interrupt, or sets a system request bit, with a locally optimized time interval which will bring control back to the device driver to assure subsequent continuation and completion of the task.
