Disclosed systems and methods allow a user and/or an author to control what resources are presented on which device sets (whether they are integrated or not), and provide for coordinating browsing activities to enable such a user interface to be employed across multiple independent systems. Disclosed systems and methods also support new and enriched aspects and applications of hypermedia browsing and related business activities.

An interactive television program guide system is provided. An interactive television program guide provides users with an opportunity to select programs for recording on a remote media server. Programs may also be recorded on a local media server. The program guide provides users with VCR-like control over programs that are played back from the media servers and over real-time cached copies of the programs. The program guide also provides users with an opportunity to designate gift recipients for whom programs may be recorded.

Methods and systems that provide enhanced personal video recorder (“PVR”) and interactive television program guide (“IPG”) functionality are provided. An interactive television application (“application”) may be implemented to provide such functionality. The application may be used to display a list of PVR recordings, to schedule recordings to a PVR, to configure recordings, to view a list of scheduled recordings, to configure recording settings, or to select delete priority settings for recordings. The application may integrate pay-per-view and PVR functionality. The application may send user notifications for changes that are to be made to the recording content of a PVR. Live programming may be buffered by the application using a straight buffers that are created for each new program. Parallel buffers for concurrent programs may be implemented using multiple tuners. Straight buffers may be used in managing or controlling the flow of programming. Television content may be automatically paused when a user is engaged in using the application. Multiple IPGs for different users of a PVR may be implemented. Other PVR related features are also provided.

Systems and methods for interactive program guides with personal video recording features

A method and system for commanding and controlling diverse home devices. A first home device capable of displaying user interface data is connected to a home network. A second home device stores user interface data that defines a user interface for commanding and controlling the second home device, also connected to the home network. The first device receives the user interface data from the second device over the network. The first device then displays the user interface as defined by the data. The user interacts with the user interface displayed on the first device by a control device. User input is accepted from the user responsive to the interaction. Control and command information is sent from the first home device to the second home device in order to control the second device according to the user input. Since the user interface can be displayed from any device, a single control device may control a plurality of different devices without requiring any change in the mode of operation of the control device.

A method and system for generating a program guide for a home network having at least one multi-media device connected thereto is provided. According to the method, multi-media material associated with a first home device is identified. An HTML page is generated, based on the identified multi-media material associated with the first home device. The HTML page is stored in an accessible area on the first home device. A second home device, which is browser based, may be connected to the home network to receive the HTML page and to render the HTML page, for display to a user.

A method and system for commanding and controlling diverse home devices on a home network to perform a service is provided. According to the method, a client device that is capable of displaying a user interface is connected to a home network. A software agent is executed on the client device to cause a user interface to be displayed on the client device. First and second home devices connected to the home network are selected from the user interface, and control and command data are sent from the client device to the first and second home devices to cause these devices to communicate with each other to perform the service.

According to the method, sequences of commands which are used to control a home device are stored as a macro to control the home device. A sequence of commands, used to control a plurality of home devices in tandem, is stored as a macro. The invention provides the user a capability of operating a single button to implement a sequence of control commands from within an HTML page contained on the respective home devices being controlled.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interface for accessing electrical household appliances currently coupled with a home network. SOLUTION: A DTV (digital television) 102, a DVCR (digital vide cassette recorder) 110, a DVD (digital video disk) 108, a DSS (dicision support system)-NIU 104 and a security system 120 indicate the electrical household appliances currently coupled with the home network 100. The DTV (to be operated as a client) 102 of a browser base receives, decodes HTML files related to the electrical household appliances (to be operated as a server) and displays control and instruction information of each in a diagram on a visible display. Each electrical household appliance transmits a self-customized GUI (graphic user interface) to the DTV 102. The DTV 102 receives the HTML files from the electrical household appliances via the home network 100 using an HTTP protocol. Each HTML file includes control and instruction information to the electrical household appliances.
