A minimally invasive, medical, image acquisitions system outputs a light beam (30, 32) or pulse which illuminates a precise spot size. A plurality of photon detectors (14) detect returning photons (44) from the object, including the spot. Pixel resolution is determined by the area of the illumination spot (and thus the lens configuration), rather than an area sensed by the detector. Depth enhancement is determined by correlating images detected by the respective detectors, or alternatively by a range finding method based on phase difference, time of light, frequency or interferometry.

Image acquisition with depth enhancement

A multiple channel scanning device has a scanning head with multiple columns of apertures that emit light which is projected to a small spot on the surface of a recorded medium. Light returned from the medium reenters the apertures and is conducted to detectors. In a preferred embodiment, the scanning head is rapidly oscillated (may be on the order of 100 kHz rate), in a direction parallel to the columns. The medium is moved in a direction perpendicular to the columns so that the same recorded regions pass beneath successive columns of apertures. The data from the detectors is image-processed to improve the quality of data reading using the successive readings of the same data regions. This allows errors to be corrected and throughput to be improved.

An optical scanner employs a scanning head provided with an array of light-emitting apertures. According to one embodiment, for example, light is directed through wave-guides or optical fibers, embedded in the scanning head, to the apertures. The head is oscillated by a micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) motor. This generates a rapidly sweeping array of light spots on the scanned surface. Light is projected to a scanned surface and collected through the same apertures. In an alternate embodiment, scanning head is provided with separate optical fibers, one for each light spot. Each fiber is vibrated by a separate MEMS motor and individually oscillated in synchrony.

Multiple parallel source scanning device

A controller for a scanning head images light from the scanning head onto a target surface for reading and writing data. Light returned from the target surface is received by the same aperture. Light may be conducted from the aperture, for example, by a light waveguide leading to a detector. The focus control of the imaging optics is controlled responsively to the light returned through the aperture. When this returned light is at a maximum, the focusing optics are in focus. A focus controller may be programmed to dither (intentionally vary) the configuration of the optics to determine the focus optimization direction (gradient). In an embodiment with multiple apertures, each employed to scan a respective area of the target surface (in parallel), the light from adjacent apertures is effectively rejected each other aperture thereby eliminating crosstalk.

Method and apparatus for controlling the focus of a read/write head for an optical scanner

An optical fibre (4) with a light-receiving end (18) is mechanically driven so that its end moves to scan an image, the optical fibre being driven to oscillate substantially at or near the natural resonant frequency of the fibre. The movement of the optical fibre is driven by at least one bimorph ceramic oscillator (20, 22). The light-receiving end of the fibre traces a scan path in the form of a time-varying Lissajous pattern.
