Purpose – While nowadays an extensive literature promoting knowledge management (KM) exists,
there is a worrying shortage of empirical studies demonstrating an actual connection between KM
activities and organizational outcomes. To bridge this gap, this paper aims to examine the link between
KM practices, firm competitiveness and economic performance.
Design/methodology/approach – This paper proposes a framework of KM practices consisting of
human resource management (HRM) and information communication technology (ICT). These both are
hypothesized to impact competitiveness and economic performance of the firm. Hypotheses are then
tested with structural equation modeling by using a survey dataset of 234 companies.
Findings – The results show that HRM and ICT practices for managing knowledge are quite strongly
correlated and have a statistically significant influence on both financial performance and
competitiveness of the firm. The findings also indicate that ICT practices improve financial
performance only when they are coupled with HRM practices.
Research limitations/implications – The data are limited to companies from Finland, Russia and
China.
Practical implications – The paper contributes to managerial practice by pointing out the importance
of utilizing a combination of both social and technical means for KM and illustrating that they do matter
for the company bottom line.
Originality/value – This paper contributes to the literature on knowledge-based organizing by
empirically analyzing the performance impact of various areas of KM. It thereby tests the proposition put
forth in many previous theoretical and case-based studies that KM promotes high organizational
performance. It also addresses the interaction of social and technical KM practices in producing
organizational outcomes.

In general, developing countries are lagging behind in e-government adoption compared to developed countries. Within Indonesia, there is a huge disparity in e- government implementation between districts. This study presents e-government challenges and the role of political leadership in the rural district of Sragen, one of the leading districts in implementing e-government in the country. The study focuses on the supply-side of e- government, and categorises the challenges in three main areas; management, infrastructure, and human factors. Initiatives taken to deal with these challenges are presented and strong political leadership is found to play an important role.

Knowledge exploration–exploitation and information technology: crisis management of teaching–learning scenario in the COVID-19 outbreak

Understanding how and why some firms have proficiency in exploring and exploiting opportunities is a cutting-edge research problem. Our central thesis is that information technology (IT) performs a key role in firms’ opportunity exploration and exploitation. We test the proposed theory using partial least squares path modeling on a combination of survey and secondary data from 203 Spanish firms. We find that: (1) IT infrastructure provides the foundation to build business experimentation and the flexibility to sense and explore business opportunities; and (2) IT-enabled business flexibility helps firms to develop the operational proficiency to exploit opportunities and increase their performance.

Business process management (BPM) has been discussed in much literature as a crucial approach to achieve firm-enterprise business performance, however in term of digital business transformation to face the current digital enterprise business era, there is still much to be explored. Drawing sociotechnical perspective of ETHICS theory, the study develops and conceptualize information technologies/systems (IT/IS) proactive capability and socialization-codification knowledge process that produce business transformation process in digital-based era.,Of the 173 company-enterprise respondents in Indonesia, the authors empirically test and validate the conceptual model using structural equation model tool-SmartPLS and SPSS statistical. The enterprise respondents were manufactures industry, construction services, hardware and software, plantation and agriculture, financial and insurance services, and other retail trade.,The authors found different findings of mediating effect and direct relationship effect. Socialization knowledge process has directly influence IT/IS proactive capability and enterprise digital business transformation. Codification knowledge process has successfully support IT/IS proactive capability, but unsupported correlation on enterprise digital business transformation. Also, IT/IS proactive capability positively influence enterprise digital business transformation. Enterprise business process suffers when the firm transform their business process into digital-based only using codification knowledge practices because documented knowledge (codification type) is not strong enough to help company in the way of enterprise digital business transformation. Mediating role show IT/IS proactive capability is crucial approach for enterprise business transformation to maximize codification knowledge practices. The findings present one fully supported results of mediation role through IT/IS proactive capability. A stronger support for enterprise IT/IS strategy in company, a high opportunity for codification knowledge practices to improve the digital ways to transform the enterprise business process. In short, the results can guide enterprise managers on how to manage their knowledge resources and maximizing emerging technologies to achieve enterprise digital business transformation.,The authors acknowledged that future studies would be worthwhile to create, develop and strengthen the model and its related foundation. Future research may try different concept/theory that applicable in enterprise digital business transformation. Also, an opportunity for future study is how enterprise digital business transformation in different context of industries with the current emerging technologies (e.g. IoT, big data, AI).,This study offers a theoretical and conceptual framework to the applicable digital-based within enterprise business transformation context. A knowledge/novel contribution of this study is the integration of a sociotechnical that highly relevant and drives enterprise digital business transformation. This study also is an effort to combine some areas such as business transformation strategy, knowledge-intensive business services, knowledge management and IT/IS.
