In a hinged security window grating that cannot be opened from the outside but which is readily releasably from within by the lowering of a vertical locking bar that engages the closed grating. The release mechanism includes a tubular member attached to the building wall for slideably engaging the lower end of the locking bar. The tubular member and corresponding point on the locking bar have slots which are engaged by one end of a pivoted lever, the opposite end of which has a pedal which, when depressed, pivots the lever so that it withdraws from the slots to permit the locking bar to vertically drop to release its lock on the grating.

A window assembly including a storable fire escape ladder is described including a first frame mounted in the wall of the building and having a window support frame positioned therein with the window support frame being pivotally connected at its upper end to the first frame to enable the support frame to be pivotally moved from a closed position outwardly to an escape or open position. The first frame includes a storage compartment at its lower end in which the fire escape ladder is stored. A panel member extends downwardly from the window in the window support frame and normally closes or covers the open outer end of the storage compartment when the window support frame is in its closed position.

Security gate apparatus for securing building openings in the nature of window and door openings are disclosed; and comprise a security gate including gate-carried locking means which, while of particularly sturdy construction and effective to render it extremely difficult if not impossible as a practical matter to open the security gate from without the building opening, are nonetheless virtually foolproof in operation, and which are very readily and conveniently openable from within the building, even by those of somewhat limited mental and/or physical capacities, in readily apparent manner to thereby insure virtually immediate exit from the building through the building opening for the building occupants in emergency situations. Fixed security means are operatively associated with the security gate, and are of readily and conveniently adjustable extent; to thereby enable the ready adjustment in situ of the size of the security gate apparatus, and provide for significant versatility of application of the security gate apparatus with regard to the range of sizes of the building openings which may be effectively secured thereby.

Security gate apparatus

A security grille (1) adapted to securely close off a window, but which may be manually released from within the building including the window while maintaining security preventing unauthorized access from the exterior of the building. The grille (1) is attached along one edge by hinges (2), or by a releasable mechanism, and is lockable in position by locking device (20) on an opposite edge. The locking device (20) may including locking bolts which protrude out through holes (21, 24 ) which engage holes (22, 25) within a surrounding frame (32). The grille (1) can comprise two portions (1a, 1b) joined at their mating edges by further hinges (23). The frame (32) is secured by bolt devices (26), or the like to the wall structure of the building surrounding the window to be protected.

A window assembly having an internal propelling system is provided. A movable window unit within a frame of the window assembly is provided. Also provided is an internal propelling system comprising at least one piston and cylinder assembly mounted at least partially within the frame of the window assembly. The internal propelling system propels the movable window unit to a relatively open position upon activation of the system.

A window guard assembly has features that allow it to be released from the inside to allow occupants to escape in case of fire. The window guard assembly also has features that prevent the locking mechanism from being actuated by an intruder on the outside of the building. The guard assembly has a guard mounted to a window frame for covering a window. The guard is pivotally mounted, and a locking mechanism selectively prevents the pivoting of the guard. A latch member controls the locking mechanism. An enclosure is formed around the latch member to prevent access from the exterior. The enclosure has an opening that faces the interior. A pair of doors are located at the opening, one with a vertical hinge, and the other with a horizontal hinge. Both of these doors require opening to reach the latch member. When opened, the doors form a barrier in cooperation with the window frame that requires the intruder to attempt to reach around the doors in order to reach the latch member.
